@bp1506:
I just tried UT2k3 with a Radeon 8500 LE; it worked just fine, though slow, on my under-powered machine. =) That's to be expected, though, since I'm running on a PIII-650. If you have X 4.3 installed, you should be able to just "emerge ati-drivers". This will direct you to download a file from another website, which you put in /usr/portage/distfiles. "emerge ati-drivers" again, run fglrxconfig and you're good to go.
@everyone else:
As to FPS in Linux vs. Win*, I've noticed a consistent loss in framerate with Linux. I wonder if the 3D in Linux is more CPU intensive than Windows. Q3, for example, will net around 115 fps vs. my Linux install, which goes down to 75. NWN in WinXP is only slightly faster than my Linux version. JKII actually had a similar framerate to the WinXP client.
Are there any spiffy variables that can be set for ATI and 3D? Aside from overclocking the card, that is. =) |

I don't know for ATI, but with the nvidia drivers I get higher framerates at all native ports, except for ut2003. And that's the game where I need it the most
I get 2,5 times as high FPS in Vendetta in Linux compared to WinXP _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

that's the difference between the (optimized) direct3d that's used in windows and the (less supported) opengl that's used in linux. If they would've made 2003 only for opengl or for opengl mainly, you'd have better framerates :p |

Figured that much already. On the other hand, the Mac port must be OpenGL only as there's not DirectX for Mac either. And since it took so long I presume they spend a lot of time optmizing the engine for opengl... so they should just backport their improvements to the opengl renderer to Linux _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

Yah, i got ut2003 installed using open gl and the ati-drivers, but it runs pretty slow, my windows install runs way faster. Must be that open gl support by ati sucking. I think the best open gl support was when 3dfx was still on the scene, my voodoo 3 kicked ass compared to running direct 3d. |

Nah it's not about nvidia's or ATi's opengl support. At least nvidia's is very good. I don't know about ATi's as I don't have an ATi video card.
The problem is just with ut2k3 They were lazy bitches and didn't optimize much. _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

Which reminds me again: Why doesn't the UT2003 Game CD come with drivers for ATI Radeon? The FireGL drivers are supposed to be working great.
Does anyone know why Radeon support is left out? |

I hope they'll spend more time on UT2004's opengl :p
(btw: they want to make a new one every year now, they've seen that EA Sports gets loads of money every year with the new version and they wanna join the party
This should mean better and better support (i hope) |
