FWIW I now have ntfs3g working with 2.6.18-no2 kernel.

have not given it a thorough test yet but looks hopeful. :D

Just as well because the kernel ntfs support now hangs the system every time I try to mount anything with it.

Append /etc/conf.d/local.start with a line like this:
Code:
ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /win/C -o silent,umask=0,locale=en_US.utf8,uid=1000,gid=100

Hause, I don't know if you left this problem solved like this or you've actually found the cause of your problem. I've found mine :D
In my particular case, the problem was that the moun line for ntfs-3g in fstab was before the mount line for /usr
And since ntfs needs /usr, the mount line for /usr needs to be first in the fstab. I've solved the problem by moving the lines mounting ntfs-3g to the end of fstab.
Maybe this solves your problem as well.
