FWIW I now have ntfs3g working with 2.6.18-no2 kernel.
have not given it a thorough test yet but looks hopeful.
Just as well because the kernel ntfs support now hangs the system every time I try to mount anything with it. _________________ Linux, because I'd rather own a free OS than steal one that's not worth paying for.

Hause, I don't know if you left this problem solved like this or you've actually found the cause of your problem. I've found mine
In my particular case, the problem was that the moun line for ntfs-3g in fstab was before the mount line for /usr
And since ntfs needs /usr, the mount line for /usr needs to be first in the fstab. I've solved the problem by moving the lines mounting ntfs-3g to the end of fstab.
Maybe this solves your problem as well.
