So i have 3 hard disks, 2 IDE and one SATA. I installed gentoo on hda, everything went fine. the other hard drive is hdd, and finally the SATA is sda. the root partition for the gentoo install is /dev/hda2 and my windows is installed on the first partition of sda (so /dev/sda1 i guess). so my question is this even when booting gentoo i get this error
Code:
root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.16-gentoo-r11 root=/dev/hda2

Error 15: File not found

Press any key to continue. . .

and when i try to boot the sata partition i have this code
Code:

rootnoverify (hd2,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

and it doesnt boot either, i have tried (hd3,0) and (hd1,0) as well for the windows partition and it doesnt seem to be working.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/grub-error-guide.xml

Check out that link, and it'll tell you what is causing Error 15, and how to fix it.

Good luck.

Cryptix,

Your best option is to use the GRUB console and auto-complete to determine how GRUB is calling your disks. You can also look at /boot/grub/device.map.

Split from original thread due to its length: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-122656.html
