The x61s is probably what you are looking for though a little more expensive, and no cdrom.

AAAHHHH

I like the s-video out, eventhough it is sooo obsolete, unlike ps/2 stuff I can see myself in a situation wanting to plug into a old s-video and watch a movie since all the tiny media players do not include them.
I do like idea of the 64 bit processor. My house mate is running gentoo amd64 on an insprion. He spends most of his time in vista though :(.
the core 2 duo's and the AMD Turion's are hard to evaluate and compare. There is somthing here explaining the AMD vision/ approach. It kinda gives one the feeling that 1 or 2 years from now 32 bit anything will be a handicap.
What would be any pro's cons interms of power consumption and longevity?
I was using my laptop for dsitcc so if I went with a 64bit could I use crossdev or somthing and still compile for x86 and ppc?
I am noticing these solid state hard disks too which is interesting. I could keep most of my Gentoo stuff and large files on a my old ancient history desktop now server. My entire HD on my laptop now has like 5 kernels a ton of cruft in /usr/portage and 2 years worth of work documents tons of music and a few video's and I am at like 17-18G I could easily use a 16G SSD. However the price is quite high for somthing that lasts how long???
keep the ideas rolling in!

Edit: looks like there is a ALSA issue on this one that is solved here

At least I am, I have successfully installed and ran Gentoo on 2 Dells inspirons, 1 HP dc2000 (or something like that) and 1 IBM (T60). These gave me no problem with hardwares except for the bluetooth in 1 dell (e1405) which somehow fixed itself after a while. Hp was great in terms of media, the remote worked out of the box!!

Great comparison turtles!

@barophobia: X61's are great! but a little too expensive and I am not very sure how strong they are. If anyone has any experience with those please let me know.

For now I am still leaning towards the Dell 630N. I got it priced at 1391 with all the features I want, the SSDs are very interesting, besides the lightning speed, what I am also raelly interested is the battery saving part of it! But they are just not worth it right now, Dell sells them at 400-500$+ but next year this time you may get those at 20% of that. About the lifetime issue, I want to see something with a SSD and a conventional HDD together, so I can mount /var in the HDD and keep the portage in the SSD. I am sure our next laptops will have SSDs in them.

I have Gentoo installed on a Latitude D420 with all features working except burning CDs with the external cdrom drive but I don't burn that much and didn't spend time on this issue.

I'd definitly go for the D430.

Solid-state hard drives would be horrible ideas for a Gentoo-based system. Doing regular syncs would tear through them pretty bad, I'd imagine. Although they would be very nice for a package-based distribution. Or, if you stored your portage directories on a platter-based drive.

I have one, everything I care about works on it, wireless, alsa, SD. Battery life is excellent! Is not too flashy in terms of looks, although I will not leave it laying around a coffee shop unattended for.

I went with the slowest cpu speed, don't really care that much for cpu speed that much. I have other computers that handle my number crunching for me.

external cdrom will add another $80 ish to the final cost. If you need a external mouse then more money. So it is not a cheap laptop in the end.

I suggest you not test the strength of any laptop, get a good protective cover for it.

Well i think I am going to order this:
Quote:
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.20GHz) 4M L2 Cache, 667Mhz Dual Core edit
OPERATING SYSTEM FreeDOS Operating System Kit edit
LCD PANEL 14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD Panel edit
MEMORY 2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS edit
HARD DRIVE 80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM edit
OPTICAL DRIVE 24X CD-RW/DVD Data Only edit (Read dead weight, I'd rather not have any)
VIDEO CARD Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 edit
WI-FI WIRELESS CARD Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card edit
FINGERPRINT READER OPTION Standard Touchpad edit (i hope this means I dont get this silly thing)
My Accessories
PRIMARY BATTERY 9 Cell Primary Battery

The only thing I am not sure of is the screen and nvidia upgrade.
I only watch movies occasionaly and am not a gamer so not sure why I need the upgrade?

I am looking at $1271
the think pad is enticing but I am concerned the screen is too small and I might not like the pointer.
and last advice?

Well guys... if you're _so_ concerned about case strength... Take a shot at some Panasonic Toughbook, Genereal Dynamics Itronix or Mitac Getac. You can drop most of those off of a 2 story building roof... or submerge them for an hour or so without any worries. Hell you can get a tank drive over them.

Or you can get your Lenovo... IBM got famous for their "strong" cases. Everything I hear about Lenovo seems to uphold that.

And yes, this post was supposed to be at least somewhat funny... Lenovo should be ok for regular use - including a kick or two per day, or a drop from a chair - table would be pushing it tho. On the other hand... GD C4 GoBook looks omg-I-want-it-now-just-so-I-can-throw-it-out-the-window-infront-of-my-wife!

Here is a interesting deal on a pre loaded linux laptop:
Quote:
- Operating System Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Linux
- Processor Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2 GHz 800 MHz FSB 4 MB L2
Display: 15.4" Widescreen WSXGA (1680 x 1050)
Graphics: nVidia 512 MB GeForce 8600GT
Audio Output: Realtek ALC 268
Networking: 10/100/1000 (LAN), WiFi
Wireless: 802.11 abg
Expansion: Express Card
Ports: VGA, 4x USB 2.0, MIC-In, Headphone Out, FireWire 1394, S-Video
Card Reader: 3 in 1 Card Reader
Battery: 9 Cell Lithium Ion
Battery Life: 3 hours
Dimensions: 14.20" x 10.43" x 1.74" (WxDxH)
Weight: 5.9 lbs.
- Memory 2 GB - 2 x 1 GB DDR2 667 MHZ
- Hard Drive 80 GB 7200 RPM SATA
- Optical Drive CD-RW / DVD-RW
- Wireless 802.11 abg
- Bluetooth Bluetooth
- Hardware Warranty 1 Yr. Ltd. Warranty and Technical Support
$1,535.00 $1,535.00
Sub-Total: $1,535.00

I priced this with the same hardware bill I used on my other comparisons earlier.
Would still have to make a Gentoo partition but DVD R/W for those whom care and a nice video card comparable to the macbook pro for less and it comes with actual open source linux?
I upgraded the processor, hard disk, ram for heavy development / Gentoo use.
and blue tooth all of which are optional you can actually get in to this for around $1100.
Oh and it meets my s-video out and the trackpad requirement. I know you can get a vga to s-video adaptor on ebay for like $20 but one more thing to loose.

Pro's no reformatting a brand new drive comes in a linux ext3 format, no windows or OS X tax, can make a new partition easily and install Gentoo in a new partition from chroot in Ubuntu. Company supports linux on the laptop so any driver issues or questions they will support (they had to get certified by Ubuntu), similar price to Dell and same as Thinkpad but includes better graffix chip set. You can support a company that supports linux. Company has a forum where people have asked about Gentoo installs and open source driver questions.
Con's optical drive is not optional however I did not check other models. They wont give you support if you are not running Ubuntu however Ubuntu can be pretty broadly defined as well as Gentoo. I will probably keep an ubuntu partition really small as a back up partition. Also if you talk specifics in terme of kernel modules and driver packages it is all similar.
Not sure about case strength.

And on case strength you can get a extra heavy duty dell or an entry level Gobook for around $3500.00
The Dell has all kinds of weird options like pre partitioned hard drives and exceptions from the warranty on returning the hard drive. You can also get used gobooks on ebay seam really out of date but if you install a new HD and a slim version of Gentoo? may be all you need for durable feild notebook. The main features I like about the gobook is the display is rated for outdoor use, has GPS, spill proof keyboard and durability. Out of my price range though.

Aren't they a tad expensive? $49 for a (unknown, but may as well be branded) 512MB stick of DDR2 RAM... I just bought me a 1GB Patriot stick for $32. $95 for a 120GB hdd? I can get one for $85 (so I would, technically, get the 40GB included in the laptop price for free AND save another $10).

IF I'd buy from them I'd stick to a bare minimum and just add in stuff I'd buy from somewhere else at half price they offer. I think the preinstalled linux means inflated prices. For example... I can buy a lappy with preinstalled Vista/XP for the same price as with Linux. BUT - returning Vista/XP for a refund makes that same laptop somewhere between $50 and $100 cheaper (depends on the Win flavour).

In a nut shell it is $86 more than the Thinkpad x61s and $145 more than dritan's model of D630 and has a DVD burner and better graffix.

The 1,449.00 Think pad, the $1271 Dell and the Toshiba in my comparison post above had the System graphics: Intel GMA X3100 GM965 all of them smaller screens.
The Dell that dritan probably ordered had the upgraded 135M 8400M-GS based nvidia chip for I think making her total $1390 or $145 less than the system76 she also did not upgrade to the DVD R/W wich add's on around $90.

Only the $2,499.00 macbook pro included a similar DVD burner and the superior GeForce 8600GT chip set in the base price making the system76 the same as a Macbook pro but $964 less
and they throw in a right click button (sorry I am really hung up on that as long as liinux uses middle click for paste I need those 2 buttons right there).
Although Dells politics are getting better the D630 only offered Freedos (no GUI) and not Ubuntu when they offer Ubuntu on other models with a "made for windows" sticker next to the Ubuntu choice. Now where is the demand for freedos on a brand new laptop? I dont know if Dell is an Ubuntu partner either.

The 1,449.00 x61s thinkpad was my runner up based on size and weight and did not have any optical drive at all since I think optical drives are worthless (more so if you have s-video out) and it was an option to exclude it. Eventough it is around $86 more expensive than the Thinkpad you basicly get a cross between a macbook pro and a thinkpad. It has the s-video out, the touch pad, etc. But the x61s only has a Xga display and no graffix chip upgrade available.
If you upgrade the DVD on the thinkpad and the Dell and upgrade to the Nvidia on the dell you are getting close in price. I just selected the same amount of memory upgrades on all of them. You would have to compare what they all are charging for the individual memory upgrades.

Next I consider that getting a jumpstart on a Gentoo install by already having a formatted drive and a working linux environment for a chroot, not having the hassle of returning OSuX or Windowns and reformatting a drive may be worth the $86-145 left in the price gap.
next you have opening the case to install memory...
Or consider the excellent linux support they have etc..
A Gentoo install is a non billable non paid time commitment for me and there are only 52 weekends per yer so anything to speed you along is worth it in my mind. However you are correct if you have a little extra time you can upgrade everything and sell the new never used stuff including OS software online.
Since I fixed my old laptop I don't get a new one yet. But it is fun to look at what is out here.

Just got my Thinkpad T61 in the mail, will be testing out Linux in a week or so after I give Vista it's run ( )

Specs:

Core 2 Duo T7300
2gb RAM
Intel Pro Wireless 4965 ABGN
Bluetooth
Intel GMA X3100
14.1" WXGA+@1440x900 Resolution(fucking sweet)

Really want to try this with Fedora 8 when it comes out, but after Vista gets wiped will give Gentoo a shot and will post my findings on these forums.

So Gentoo didn't work as well as I wanted it too, but Fedora 8 runs flawlessly on this fine piece of hardware!

Does suspend and hibernation work with the proprietary ati drivers? assuming you have an ati card.

ATI card isn't available for my model, it's either intel onboard(What I list in my specs) or the nvidia quadro

PostPosted: Thu Apr 03, 2008 11:34 pm    Post subject: Reliable Gentoo Notebook? Reply with quote

Hello,

I am in the market for a new notebook that I intend to install Gentoo on. I would rank myself as an experienced Linux user that has been trying to install Gentoo over the past year but has lacked the time (full time university student). Come this summer, I'll be purchasing a modern notebook and I will finally have the time to get Gentoo beyond the minimal installation.

Are there notebooks you guys would recommend, either through second hand knowledge or experience, that meet the following requirements:

1) Hardware must be reliable and withstand abuse (as in reviewing notes on my lap on a rikkity bus inbetween classes every day for three years). The computer cannot break down. It is an integral part of my life. It simply must work.
2) Must have at least 15" widescreen and decent battery life (3+ hours)
3) It MUST BE GENTOO COMPATIBLE! PERIOD!
4) I am looking at higher performance systems, I am willing to shell out extra money for higher end, reliable and compatible hardware.

Thank you for your time,
-sdls

I run gentoo on my Thinkpad T60 and love it. It is not widescreen, but there is a widescreen version of the T61 which is basically the same machine. There are a few good wikis showing the current linux hardware support for Thinkpads, such as http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Lenovo_Thinkpad_T61

I have Gentoo on my IBM thinkpad. It was as easy to install as on my desktop.
Plus there is tons of documentation. :)
