The problem is you can't use the GTK installer due to this problem. It crashes out and leaves you with no option but to wash, rinse, repeat, re-crash.
By saying they won't fix the bug the developers have decided to make the graphical installer a waste of effort. In my case I went in and installed the old fashoned way (never HAVE gotten that graphical POS to work), but for anyone who is trying out Gentoo and hasn't done this a few hundred times before they're out of luck.
Bad for them, bad for the community, bad for Gentoo, bad for Linux.
Do these guys work in Redmond now? |

I posted one more (3 in fact) comment on the bug. But it will be helpful if you guis that have problem describe your problem on this bug. You will certainly do it better as me because it is not my problem but yours.
Another solution will be to fill another bug report about not pyopengl and the tcltk flag but the livecd and this flag. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |

I asked on gentoo-dev@lists.gentoo.org, and here is the answer I get, nothing less, nothing more:
Quote: | The gtk installer is NOT broken. Have you tried to install without the
tk/tcl/tcltk use flag? Personally, I installed with the default flags
set, in fact, I told it networkless install and was up and running in
about 40 minutes (366MHz) - The installer works, but not every single
USE flag combination can be tested. You can *always* change a flag
after you have the system installed. |
EDIT: I am reading the handbook, 3.e. make.conf: Quote: | USE flags
Since you are performing a GRP/networkless install, you will not be allowed to select USE flags before installation. However, you are free to set your own USE flags in /etc/make.conf after you have rebooted into your finished system. |
So, I have a question. Have you altered the use flag before rebooting into your finished system? _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |

I'm doing a fresh GTK+ install on a dual HT Xenon as I write this. I'll outline the steps I take as I take them and we'll see what happens. I will stick to defaults as much as possible.
Standard install
Network up and running (tested with a ping in a teminal window)
2048MB Swap
236427MB ReiserFS mounted on / (I'm brave, and heads are heads...it's one device)
No network shares
Stage 3 URI: CUDenver 2006.1 stage 3 bzip
Normal (emerge sync)
No changes on make.conf setup (use flags all default)
livecd-kernel (default)
grub (default...this'll be new; I'm a lilo guy)
Timezone Denver
eth0/dhcp
vixie/syslog-ng
No extra package
No services at startup
gdm/Gnome/UTC/vi for other settings. I'll load Windowmaker later.
No users added
Install...
...install complete
Reboot...
...I get a login prompt and a valid network connection. From here I can build everything else.
Looks like the GTK installer will work if you don't mess with too many settings. When I try to make a sytem the way I WANT it with the GTK installer it dies.
My advice is to listen to their advice; use the installer, get a bootable system, then set it up the way you want.
Set, point, and match to the devs. I'll shut up now. |
