Hi,

after a weekly emerge --update --newuse --deep world my system was broken with numerous problems. Most of them now are ok but still the most serious one persists.

To be sure, I did emerge -e world but its still there. When I did dispatch-conf I selected use new for everything.
Code:
udevd-event[2430]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2431]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed
udevd-event[2436]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2437]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed
udevd-event[2439]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2440]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed
udevd-event[2443]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2446]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed
udevd-event[2445]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2447]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed
udevd-event[2451]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_hotplugd' failed
udevd-event[2452]: run_program: exec of program '/sbin/udev_run_devd' failed

I get this on startup in the 100's of 1000's, and 4 sets of those pairs when logging out on the tty terminals (not in X). Also when I su to any user I see:

Code:
genjix@ioshape ~ $ su genjix
Password:
configuration error - unknown item 'GETPASS_ASTERISKS' (notify administrator)
genjix@ioshape ~ $

Any help please? I can use wacom but cannot read cds, or use any usb devices... What is causing this?

Thanks

Search the forum, there are lots of people that have experienced this (including me). However, everyone's solution seems to be different.

I'll get you started with this thread.

Thanks so much! I followed your advice there and cds/dvds work fine now :)

Unfortunately usb still does not work...

In KDE I get the dialog for the camera popup (open in new window, digikam, do nothing) but when I open it in new window nothing appears and digikam cannot read it.

The scanner only works as root eventhough I add my user to the scanner group...

Any ideas?

Also the gphoto2 command seems to work as root so it looks like I need to add my users to some new usb group of some kind?
