First the background

So I've done an emerge sync & world and nafter some (fixed) problems I have the new "modular" xorg running.

Now: I've always wanted transparency. xcommgr and transset (aka, the composite extension) never worked right for me but I hear that something called XGL/compizzle (not available before the modular version of xorg) can let me get transparency without having to use the composite extension. It will do other things like 3d effects and wriggly windows but I don't care about that. Transparency is all I am interested in.

So I've been doing some reading, including: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL and a question has emerged. From that page I quote:
Code:

Xgl is an X server that uses OpenGL for its drawing operations. Together with compiz, an OpenGL compositing and window manager, it allows for some cool desktop effects. Xgl relies on an extension to mesa,

I currently use blackbox.

Actual questions

  • Will I need to replace blackbox with compiz in order to get transparency? (Y/N)
  • Is it actually possible to have XGL transparency while still running blackbox? (Y/N)

thank you for your advice

I wish it worked with Openbox or Fluxbox. Although, it doesn't. XFCE4 is the latest Window Manager you can get it on. 'Tis what I'm using right now.

Yes, I wish it ran with fluxbox or other. I'm currently running xfce4 with it, but my asthetic sensibilities run in other directions. Let us know if you discover something else.
