No no! They're also good for hurling your villagers into the ocean and then retrieving them, and destroying the village crops and buildings with explosive poop! And also building things and then throwing giant rocks at it before pooping on the crushed remains.
Also it can eat people despite being a herbivore.
And presumably poop them out later.
(Yes, I chose a Cow for my Avatar when I (tried to) play Black and White... Apparently I am not a very good giant-god-animal trainer ) |

We can not have larry drop exploding poop everywhere. That would scare off the newbies ^_^ _________________ The only real failing is when you stop trying. |

Yes, bit scatalogical and not appropriate! Having said that, he could wear a methane collector to fuel his motorbike.. ;P |

I for one welcome our Cow Overlords and their luscious udders of love.
Squirt some of the gentoo milk into my mouth!
-Been a long time gentoo user... best forums, don't get into the dev politics...
-I think their style, mascot, name all fits together quite well.
Ubuntu = An african word for I can't install gentoo...
Thank You Gentoo Devs, Website Maintainers, and yes Larry too.

I don't think this issue has been given the proper attention, considering its importance. We really need to make a mascot that is prominent enough to fend off the ubuntu circle-thingy. |

I'm using Gentoo Linux for about 2 years, but I didn't use this forum very much (sorry ) and I never worried about gentoo's mascot (it's almost invisible) until I found this topic. I started to read all messages posted here (I'm not very busy today ) and now I have to write my opinion.
Quote: | Gentoo is a penguin, so gentoo's mascot should be a penguin! |
Are you really sure?
IMHO the best advertising for a product is not to say what is that product, but is to say who use that product.
Read carefully Gentoo poster at http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml, did you?
"Larry the Cow was a bit frustrated with Linux. The latest distros seemed to be just a bunch of the same old stuff. Nothing new -- nothing innovative. Then Larry tried Gentoo Linux. ... ... And he liked it."
So Larry ISN'T Gentoo, while Larry USES Gentoo!
If Gentoo Linux distro is so good that even a (as I read here) lame|transvestite|sexually confused|stupid|gay|Transexual cow can use it (sorry if I missed some attribute ), why cannot you? Are you worse than Larry?
GO LARRY GO!
Why do somebody want to change "G" logo? IMHO it's perfect. "G" is the logo, Larry the mascot: don't mix them.
About the "UFO" guy, I always considered it as Gentoo Bugzilla's mascot. It's there to catch bugs, isn't it?
After that, I like Baby Gnu and Baby Tux: they are so nice. Can someone draw a 3d Baby Larry? (I'm not so skilled) He would be very nice too.
Finally a question: where is Larry the Cow's history? Why Larry? Why a cow? I can't find any info about him.
Now I go: I have to get Larry the Cow more visible on my computer
PS: sorry for my english. |

People who love Larry hate "sweet" baby versions of mascots, even worse in 3D ...urghh |

It's just perception. Who said that a penguin is called penguin? |

Probably been mentioned before in here but the G logo for Gentoo just reminds me of a retarded Pacman, took me a while to realize that it is really meant to be a g. |

EXPLANATION
FOR WHY A COW IS GENTOO'S MASCOT
----------------------
(for n00bs)
It has horns.
get it?
Like Beastie.
--> drobbins stole portage from BSD. --> horny mascot.
A penguin with horns would look stupid.
What other animal has horns?
--> cow.

Are you an artist or something? There usually is a reason why words this old are the way they are.
http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Publications/ZooGoer/2000/1/penguinsthinice.cfm
"the word "penguin" derives either from the Latin word pinguis, meaning fat, or the Welsh words pen gwyn, meaning "white head." Both names probably first described a flightless bird that is not a penguin at all the now-extinct great auk. The great auk, a relation to the flying puffins and other auks alive today, was harvested to extinction for its fat by 1844. Before then, the black-and-white seabird was familiar quarry for people living along North Atlantic coasts. Neither auks nor penguins had white heads, but fishermen weren't necessarily focused on such details, so most etymologists stick to the Welsh words as a probable origin for the name. European explorers probing mysterious southern waters stumbled upon true penguins as early as the late 1400s, when the first penguin reference was penned off Africa's southern coast during one of Vasco da Gama's voyages. Today, scientists refer to birds as penguins only if they belong to the family Spheniscidaethe only flightless aquatic birds."
