This thread's gone somewhat off-topic...

I intend to bring it back :D

For all you fellow Larry lovers out there, I have created a bootup logo of him, and fully updated the instructions on the Gentoo-wiki so that it can be added into a modern kernel!

Do any devs think there's any chance of getting this into the Gentoo patchset? It's selectable from the kernel config just like the other logos are, and I can do other logos if you don't like that one...

:D

I have no problem with a cow mascot, although my friends were all like "What's with the cow, man?" when I booted up Gentoo with the bootsplash on.

I think Larry the Cow is just strange enough to spark up interest... Besides, cows have a weird following in UNIX circles, just think about Cowsay...
I think he/she should be included on more Gentoo pages. I'm not saying there should be cows on everything Gentoo, or that we should grow this into something like the Tux cult (of which I'm not exactly fond myself), just that this cow is a funny mascot, great for pepping up the mood of webpages. In fact the cow would be a great replacement for those ugly 3d-rendered penguins on the News page.
(And homophobes should start thinking about why they are bothered or upset by something as innocent as this.)

Cow aside, did any of you notice how the Gentoo logo looks totally like a japanese magatama? (An amulet for divine protection, comparable in role to the "Eye of Allah" in muslim culture.)

The ones on the front page, you mean? I love those penguins!

But yes, Larry does need to show up more often. See further up the page for my contribution to that effort :)

What the heck is up with the cow thing? When'd that happen? Gentoo already had a mascot, I thought -- that flying saucer thing, you can see it on bugs.gentoo.org. Which is not the most brilliant mascot ever but a cow? It's just so...generic.

I don't really think the cow is properly displayed as "the" mascot any longer. Seems like it's being phased out by this tailless piranha thingy...

I like Larry. He ain't gay. He's just not a "cow", he ought to be a bull...

I rather like the cow. I wouldn't have thought so though until I lived out here in the Azores. I'll put it this way, Terceira island is NUTS about cows. The branding is everywhere. It's impossible to go into one of the two cities and NOT see stuff branded with cows for the Azores. The cows themselves are all over the island. I've had to stop my car for herds of cows walking down the street. In some strange way, it grows on you.

I think it was because once when me and my wife were out bike-riding we were next to a stone wall with a cow on the other side that was looking at me (that STARE they do...if you've seen a cow you know what I'm talking about). In a fit of humor I mooed at it. No joke we had to make tracks out of there as the thing with a crazy look in her eye starting charging after me, stopped only by the chain around her neck. We have a policy now, NEVER taunt the cows.

Perhaps the same should follow for gentoo?

Oh, is that what it's supposed to be? Yeah, now I see it in the writing as well... Freudian blindness, I guess. The big silver one next to it catches the eye and distracts from it being a "g" quite nicely...

Hehehe, never though it could look a piranha. It seems more to me like Packman after a face lifting, after all he's quite old now :P

It's quite scary to have a sexually confused mascot!!! 8O
Why not give it a female name and have a cute "real" cow?
Maybe we can attract more women to this favoulous distro. :D
Lisa, Lucy.. think of a name of a female coder to honour
 Should the Gentoo penguin be in love the cow? ha ha ha
