My perception is that Gentoo has a logo already, and that is the machined-metal "g". You will find it many places if you browse around gentoo.org.
The cow, and the little story, occurs in the "about" page only? And I, having grown up with Swedish, probably don't get the pun or whatever--is there a joke in calling a cow Larry?
So, my feeling is, drop the cow and drop the UFO; one logo is enough. Less is more. |

Isn't Larry supposed to be the name of a MALE. Cow is a female.
"Larry the cow" seems a bit peculiar to me. |

I think we have the right idea here, tipped cows maybe a good call, even a dead one. Kinda like the good ol' CDC logo.
(Cult of the dead Cow for you noobs)
Maybe one with a Metal "G" stuck up it's arse.
Any way we can get this thred reviewed by the Gentoo guys?
Larry the transvestite cow = bad idea.
Dead Larry the bull = +1 on the scale. _________________ For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain. |

Maybe my mind is just corrupted or something, but that metal 'g' always looks like a cartoon penis to me. _________________ I have shit in my britches. Hang it around your neck and wipe your mouth on it. -- Martin Luther |

Let's try another viewpoint. Assume that the logo is the tiny icon that appears at the left end of the URL field when you browse to the home page of the product/company/organization/whatever. After browsing around a little I found
| Code: |
redhat.com hat
suse.com letter "N"
dell.com tilted "E"
gnu.org gnu
mozilla.org dinosaur
mysql.org dolphin
debian.org spiral
netbsd.org flag
mandriva.com star
tux.org tux
tucows.com cow
gentoo.org styled "g"
|
As you can see, the cow logo is already taken. And so is the penguin...
Then I would have expected to find the car company logos on respective homepages. Not so! I checked Mercedes, Toyota, Volvo, Volkswagen - no logo!
Even in the software domain many players have missed the opportunity. There is no logo for apache.org, java.sun.com, apple.com, microsoft.com, netscape.com.
And what about the publishing domain? Penguin.com - no logo! |

so it is supposed to be "Larry the Bull".....
here, "Bull" word isnt familiar..... and we used "COW" instead for both male and female.... (male Cow, female Cow )
so if we used "Larry the Cow", its means Larry is Gay.... (*I hate Gays....)
sorry, if I said something wrong.... |

Instead of aruging why the mascot doesn't work, why doesn't suggest a mascot that better represents what Gentoo stands for?
I say we keep the existing "G" logo and throw a big ricer-fin-spoiler on the top, and a racing stripe!
*ducks*
KDE - Dragon
OSX - Jaguar/Tiger
BSD - Daemon
SUSE - Lizard
GNU - GNU/Wildebeest
Personally, if we want to stick with something cute (along the lines of a cow and/or penguin) I'd suggest a ferret. Ferrets are amazing cute, and pretty damned cool.
If you want something that would command more respect, I nominate a lion mascot.
Thoughts, suggestions? _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I think the cow is slick, but I honestly also never understood it. One thing I do like about it is that it's different, fun and honestly feels more outgoing than the usual stiff corp logos.
Just my 2cents. _________________ -- w00dst0ck |

| Given Linux and Gentoo's modular design, I suggest our mascot be something that can be assembled. Perhaps a 'cute', sexless robot/droid, or something. We could call it "Gen #2" or "Gen 2" (as in it's the 2nd generation model). |

I wonder if we could get R Stevens to draw up a robot logo suggestion?

I love his pixel-art. Even better, a decent pixel image could be represented well even in ASCII.
Then again, I always said, if you ASCII a stupid question, you get a stupid ANSI. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

Why is everyone bashing poor Larry? He's not even found in too many places.
Gentoo has another mascot, Knurt the flying saucer, who's on the gentoo's homepage, and is the "hourglass" in the gentoo mouse cursor theme!
BTW, does anyone know if those penguins on the homepage have a name? _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

Glad I'm not the only one who looks at larry and thinks 'this distro rocks, too bad the mascot sucks'.
Perhaps a contest for alternative logo concepts is needed? |

Im glad I could provide a few lunch hour laughs, hope your keyboard does'nt have sliced turky stuck in it.
And for enderandrew
I did provide an alternative, a huge as turbo jet acme style rocket strapped to the ass of a gentoo penguine.
It total sticks with what Gentoo has achived. Super fast Linux.
Makes sence to me. _________________ For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain. |

I think the devs are constantly fighting the "Ricer" image, so I doubt they'll support a jet-powered penguin logo, even if it is appropriate. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

Hi enderandrew,
I am happy with the styled "g" logo. It stands out well on merchandise; check here: http://www.cafepress.com/officialgentoo/.
As for the cow story on the "about" page (http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml): I just don't see the connection between Linux distributions and a cow named Larry, so drop it, or if it is for some reason worth keeping: move it to some "Gentoo museum" page where it can be put in a context so that it makes sense to newcomers? |

Larry isn't a transvestite, he's a transexual. Big difference my friend. _________________ Please read the Forum Guidelines.
