I successfully unpacked the stage2 tarball. When I run emerge sync, I am told that there is a portage update avaliable and that I need to update it. How do I do this?

That didn't fix it I got a message that said:
| Code: | Note: /etc/make.profile isn't avaliable an emerge sync will fix this
!!!No profile directory, system mode unavaliable |
Any other suggestions?

I was following your instructions, and I didn't seem to be getting anywhere, so I turned off my machine. When I came back this morning and turned it on, I ran the command that gave me this:

And I was like, here we go again...but then I ran emerge sync and bam! it worked....
What should I do now, rerun the commands directly before it so that the emerge sync can fix the problem and then continue? P.S It still told me about the portage update, even though this time it update the tree -- which it wasn't before
