Sigh. This would have been so helpful 2 months ago when I was SO desperate for good free hosting. Now it's all done though, site's up and moving stuff ain't worth it.
Good to keep this thread in mind though.

As for me... I'm doing lots of moving so hosting stuff is out of the question, but if anybody needs a Bulgarian translation...

Why not take the next step? A "friends of gentoo" or even "friends of opensource" database. Everybody who is willing and able to help users or projects can register themself with contact-data (usaly instant messanger as one would like to get to know the people better) and the offers, as well as a status.

something like:

Name: Christoph
Nickname: Mana
Active in: Gentoo Community, linux-vserver IRC
icq: 27495311
offers:
-webspace in germany with nearly unlimited traffic
-german<->englisch translations
-advanced PHP-Coding ;-)
-Hosting configuration help

Status: very busy until 15.07.2006

with such a database, projects could easyly recruit (part time) contributers for special tasks instead of waiting for users to contact them. Or "Endusers" with problems or questions can search about who to contact.

What do you think?

i think that is an excellent idea but beyond my simple coding abilities.

I am willing to organise it if someone is willing to code it

Good idea. But I think who offer hosting and services must have to edit information about him

I think he means that if $PERSON is to add himself to the database, then $PERSON should have the ability to change details about $PERSON's offerings. :)

seems like we have the first volunteer PHP-Coder :D

Though the programming task itself should be simple, my time is still very limited, so i can only help with coding if there is now other possibility, and i would be slow then ;) but hosting with PHP5 and MySQL5 and a subversion repository are available.

so who will organize? please state your email, i will send you the login-data for the webaccount and the repository. I think to setup a dev forum should be the first task :)
Ehm and please, can somebody research if we are really the first to walk this path? We don't need a second database if allready one (not very well known) might exist. Thanks in advance.

greets
Mana

good idea. I can organise it but the php/mysql needs to be done by someone else. I am willing to spend my time doing that

okay cokehabit i send the login-data for the hosting webpanel to your hotmail account this late evening (GMT+2)

and msalerno yes i think that would help. So let me introduce you with cokehabit as he is now project manager and surely happy to manage you and your work :D.
As a hint, if you could use DBDesigner4 (in portage but keyworded) the visually created database structure can be exported to mysql-compatible SQL Create-Scripts. If you create mysql-views or even stored procedures for common tasks this would also speed up development without the need to know php.
I guess that cokehabit will send you the login for PHPmyadmin and the database to setup the structure once it is finished and probably discussed.

So ehm with all this technical stuff i think i'm the tech-admin of this project hm?

we still need designer(s) and coder(s) and a NAME for this :)

thank you guys!

What we need at this point is a project plan and a list of requirements. Before anyone can start writing code or designing a site, some guidelines should be in place.

mana, I am sure I have run into cokehabit before, it's inevitable.

Hey - I can also help with the PHP/MySQL - I have coded several times in PHP/MySQL [for some school projects] and just here and there. Maybe I can also contribute. If so my email is in my profile I believe.

we are setting up forums on a database for discussion of the project as a whole.

I'm coming up with an initial strategy then we can discuss things like who, why, where and when.

I've been following this thread. cokehabit and msalerno are right, before anything gets started (hosting, programming...etc.) we need to plan everything out, and see what the potentials of success are.

yeah, like a blueprint.

so far it has a codename and that is codename FOOD (Friends Of Opensource Databse).

A dedicated forums will be created where we can discuss how it should take place, who can offer which service to create it. I can quickly type up an initial strategy because it isn't much beyond that but i was going to try and do one with little boxes and things ;) I did project managment gantt chard but i realised that since people are giving their time for free that a professional project management template was not a good idea

Jeah ;) time pressure keeps the contributers easiely away. So Tasks are good but a schedule is to early for this stage. And cokehabit, of course we all love little boxes and things, do we? :D

since I'm currently "ascertaining the art of grey-hatting", I'm still working on C. but I am familiar with web languages.

Setting up of services? what do you mean? like setting up phpbb and stuff? pffffffft... piece of cake
