Hey all, Ive tried searching for this but its nearly impossible to find anything in the 5 XGL threads. Im wondering what I have to do to get Quinstormms compiz working properly without using dbus-launch so I have theming support etc?

You don't need dbus-launch for compiz, at least I never have.
I suspect you're actually talking about cgwd, in which case I don't know of a way around it - what's so bad about using it?

Btw, there's an option for search within topic. I start xgl using GDM, then there's no need for dbus-launch.

you need dbus-launch if you want to use quinns' cgwd theming. I highly recommend it. All you have to do is edit your start scripts and put dbus-launch before anythign to do with cgwd.

It is in the wiki, but kind of hidden. I missed it too.

i thought one has to recompile compiz is one wants to change its theme?
anyone knows if something like the xfwm4 theme "redmond" (yes, it does look exactly like windows xp) is available for compiz?

There are a lot of Vista themes. But why XP? I mean even Vista looks better than XP.

How do you change themes then? gcompizthemer with dbus-launch doesnt work.

drac, you are running

Code:

dbus-launch gcompizthemer

?

you might have to do a

Code:

compiz --replace cgwd

after selecting a new command in the themer.

**I don't know if thats the exact command ** (at work, can't up-arrow to find it). Can someone chime in on that?

Accutly, I got live theming to work with quinstormm and dbus-launch last night. Instead of calling it inside your script (compizrc or compiz-decorator or whataver you use to start compiz and cgwd) I called the actual script with dbus-launch. gcompizthemer now works perfect and live theming works as well :D Also I have the dbus deamon running, not usre if that makes a differnce or not.

It sure does :D

Im at work so I cant show you my script but I:
1) /etc/init.d/dbus start and rc-update add dbus default
2) go to my compiz/cgwd start script (/usr/bin/compiz-themer for me, could be /usr/bin/compizrc etc)
3) remove any instance of dbus launch in that script
4) go to /etc/env.d/99kde-env and set KDEWM=dbus-launch compiz-themer
5) /etc/init.d/xdm restart
6) all is working, I cant remember if I used dbus-launch on gcompizthemer or not, but one of them works.

I can posts my scripts etc when I get home.

Here are my configs for those that need them

/usr/bin/compiz-decorator
Code:

compiz --replace gconf &
sleep 6
cgwd --replace &

/etc/env.d/99kde.env

Code:

...
KDEWM=dbus-launch compiz-decorator
...

KDM server start (ATI!!)
Code:
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/Xgl -br -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer

Dont forget to /etc/init.d/dbus start and rc-update add dbus default as well.
