1. Is it safe to mount /var/tmp/ as tmpfs?
2. How big can it (basically /var/tmp/portage/) get during heavy recompiles?
3. There is a symlink "tmp->/var/tmp/" in /var/tmp. If I start using tmpfs I won't have the symlink there. Will that cause any problems? |

I don't have that symlink, guess it will be alright

That doesn't look to good: 2GB not being enough for "emerge -e world". And I have only 1GB of ram. It seems that it is not very wise, afterall, to have /var/tmp mounted as tmpfs. |

Not wise at all.
For example, for Unreal Tournament 2004 /tmp grows more than 7GBs. |

You mean /tmp or /var/tmp? My /tmp is also tmpfs and I have yet to see any problems. But then again, I don't play... |
