Last time I tried to install gentoo on my sparc 5 or 20 I spent days compiling kernels to no avail. Apparently there was some bug preventing kernel compilation. What is the current state now?

I successfully got my sparcstation20 working with the latest test iso available. Its on the topic on IRC if you look there, and I also have it on my webserver at home if you can't find it. I'll be available on irc in a couple of hours.

I can also send you the config I used for my kernel to get it working (currently using 2.4.20-sparc-r8 [or close to that, i'll look when I get home]). I have just what was needed to get the kernel working.

Feel free to get hold of me on IRC, nick is Todd, or you can email me at todd@gentoo.org

here is my config for 2.4.20-sparc-r6

its not pretty , but its functional... just check the scsi and networking stuff to make sure you have the right ones turned on for your machine.. this one works on my ss20. Probably some options turned on that aren't necessary, but I was in a hurry to see if it would run.

Good luck!

Alas, I tried booting your test ISO on my Sparcstation 5, I got as far as booting to the Ramdisk, it kernal paniced with the following error message:

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00
Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

I'm looking in to the other boot methods.

Hi Todd.
I too have a Sparc20, I've got 2.4.20-sparc-r8 to work fine when compiled for single processor, but when I turn SMP on I get the dreaded "Fixup b % doesn't refer to a SETHI at ..."

Are you running single or multiprocessor?

Thanks
Ben
