|
|
Hi,
I was wondering about using Gentoo on a PIII 550MHz. This will take a huge amount of time to have a complete system, so I thought that I could compile Gentoo on my AMD 2500+ pushed to 3200 to save compilation time. Now, the question is, could this be possible by editing make.conf and just change the architecture type and then compile the kernel with the appropriate modules and CPU type (I mean for the other PC obviusly)?
May I also compile gdm for that PC before leaving the live CD, to have a complete installation to use for the other PC?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, probably the distcc will work.
But I would like also to know if using PC of same architecture, for example my PIII and my Atholon XP are both x86, will let me to compile Gentoo uo my best PC, then took the HD to the slowest without having problem.
Thank you. |

I do not think that would be a problem as long as you kept your optimizations to x86, and did not get into Athlon-XP specific..
However, personally I would use the chroot method if you were moving drives.. that way you have a fully working gentoo to build a new one.. _________________ All reality is the construct of the observer.

Vortigern,
Thats perfectly possible provided you do the chroot and set up everything in /etc/make.conf for the target CPU.
If you use nfs, you can export the root filesystem from the target system to the host, so everything happens over the network. no movement of hard drives required.
With a little thought, /usr/portage can be shared too, so you use your existing portage tree and source doce you have already downloaded.
If you attempt that, be careful not to share the binary packages directory, if you use one. _________________ Regards,
