|
|
Hi,
I'm a little disappointed with my experiences in Blu Rays with Linux. Out of the 4 Blu Rays I've tried with VLC and libaacs/aacskeys, 2 worked, maybe I'm just having bad luck, but I don't know. Are there non-native methods of playing Blu Rays that work better than VLC? I found that, along with half the blu rays not working, VLC crashed every couple of times I tried to load a disc. So is there anything better out there? |

Hi Kate
There are a few apps out there which claim to play bluray.
Have you tried XBMC?
The following apps have the vdpau flag (which is needed for direct access to the video card):
Code: | Thistled@pig ~ $ equery hasuse vdpau
* Searching for USE flag vdpau ...
[IP-] [ ] media-libs/mesa-8.0.3:0
[IP-] [ ] media-libs/xine-lib-1.2.2:1
[IP-] [ ] media-tv/xbmc-11.0:0
[IP-] [ ] media-video/ffmpeg-0.10.3:0
[IP-] [ ] media-video/mplayer-1.1-r1:0
[IP-] [ ] virtual/ffmpeg-0.10.3:0
[IP-] [ ] www-plugins/adobe-flash-11.2.202.236:0 |
The following have the bluray USE flag:
Code: | Thistled@pig ~ $ equery hasuse bluray
* Searching for USE flag bluray ...
[IP-] [ ] gnome-base/gvfs-1.12.3:0
[IP-] [ ] media-libs/xine-lib-1.2.2:1
[IP-] [ ] media-tv/xbmc-11.0:0
[IP-] [ ] media-video/mplayer-1.1-r1:0

Dunno if it would be worthwhile playing around with said apps and see if you have a better experience.
I don't do movies really (too much crap outta Hollywood) so don't really desire BluRay.
So I can't really help anymore than my 2c worth. _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |

anything that uses the xine backend, like xine-ui would work... i think _________________ “Music is a moral law. but they'll all be using the same libaacs/aacskeys.....won't they?
I'm more interested in non-native at this point. Is it, or is it not possible to play a Bluray with wine/virtualization? |

media-video/makemkv doesn't use libaacs. I haven't had a BD yet it won't work with, and you can stream from it to VLC (or mplayer). You won't get the menu or anything, but you'll have access to the raw ts.
Alternately, you could rip the entire disk to mkv, but it takes some time and a lot of space. |

Excellent! Much appreciated, hopefully I will be able to play with that when I get home. |
