My dear man, RuiP correctly pointed out that Magitek's gender doesn't matter when considering his/her statement. Obviously, you completely missed that point.
Magitek's avatar, btw, says as much about him/her as mine does about me. :-> |

There are nicer shirts for girls even for making a photo series, in my opinion. Others than white XL-standard . _________________ ppc:PowerBook5,8 15"(1440)-G4/1.67, 2G(dev.notes[pdf]) | amd64:Core2Duo | amd64-prefix:OpenSuse@Core2Quad | Lila-Theme |

Maybe some of you didn't get it.
Someone did voluntary work and asked politely, if here's an amateur/(semi)-professional graphic artist, willing to spice up his shots.
He never said these shots are done in a professional way. They're just a proof of concept to check out, if there's an interest in this kind of photos.
Don't blame him for investing his spare time! Try do to it in a better way, support him or shut the .... no, just just try to be nice.
And don't ask to release these shots under GPL. The photographer (slick, posted it too) signed a contract, not to publish these shots for free. The model has a guarantee to benefit from other publications which is not assured, if the highres versions are available for everyone. It doesn't matter, that they are done during a break. Contract is contract and the photographer has to pay fringe benefit remuneration, if he ignores the conditions.
Inte, really really
BTW: The first wallpapers are available. _________________ Gentoo Linux - Die Metadistribution |

You're right! I see the uselessness of my question!
For the pics to be released under GPL we have to be allowed to take a look at and play with the source...
I suppose that would not be possible in this case _________________ Smaug: Sun Netra T1 105, UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz, 512MB, 2*36GB 10kRPM; 2 Sun Netra D130: 6*36GB 10kRPM, swraid 0

Sorry for this misunderstanding. pics != shots
I was just displeased of these "I would have done this better" comments. _________________ Gentoo Linux - Die Metadistribution |

Don't worry, I was just having a bit of fun!
| inte wrote: | | I was just displeased of these "I would have done this better" comments. |
But I actually agree with your last statement! This is what Gentoo and Open Source is all about. You give to the community and if somebody can improve they have the oppurtunity to do so. Everybody can choose whether or not to use/improve what is available. Empty criticism doesn't help! _________________ Smaug: Sun Netra T1 105, UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz, 512MB, 2*36GB 10kRPM; 2 Sun Netra D130: 6*36GB 10kRPM, swraid 0

I do not agree in the least. It's a common misunderstanding, though, at least in Germany. Critisism can be constructive even without a better solution. Not everyone knows his way around programming (or photography as in this case) but he/she can still voice his/her opinion about the subject matter. If only those people were allowed to speak up on matters who fully understand, we would have no progress, a completely technocratic society and much less cooperation.
I see what's wrong with unemployment, poverty and crime but I don't have a solution. Am I not allowed to speak about those problems?
In this case, people even stated clearly what exactly is wrong with these pictures:
| RuiP wrote: | | Besides the basic primary sexism, technically speeching, the light is awful, the relation with the space bad, the relation with the model all wrong. |
| Magitek wrote: | | Dodgy camera, out of focus, bad light... |
These comments are not about taste but about the way the pictures were done.
So much for the "empty" critisism.
To lament about the comments here, Inte, doesn't make things better either. If someone publishes his/her work, he simply has to be prepared for the critics. A professional should/would know that.
The excuse of it being voluntary work doesn't really fit either. Even if I do something voluntarily, I do it the best I can. Or I don't do it at all because it would reflect badly on myself and my work. More generally: If anyone volunteers for something he should be prepared to handle it as professionally as possible. Especially, if it's indeed his regular job...
Furthermore, it's natural for people to ask to get those pictures released under any sane licence. How do those pictures help if they can't really be used? From what I read both in the German and this thread, they're more or less meant to be promotional pictures for Gentoo. How are they meant to be used for such purposes if they're not released under a CC or likewise "free" licence?
All in all, there's a lot to critisize here and people did just that. Live with it.
Btw: Those wallpapers are published under which licence? The website features a copyright notice but nothing else. |

My statement:
| P3SM wrote: | | Empty criticism doesn't help! |
does NOT imply that people are not allowed to voice their opinion on whatever, like stated by:
| Philantrop wrote: | | I see what's wrong with unemployment, poverty and crime but I don't have a solution. Am I not allowed to speak about those problems? |
The point made is that just shouting remarks like:
| blank_vlad wrote: | | It's a man, baby! |
or
| OpticalDezires wrote: | | we want some topless photos with gentoo logo tatooed on the stomach of a model !!!! |
or
| Aidy wrote: | what about the ubuntu nakies... (((((((( |
do not help slick's friend to improve his technique and provide better pictures. I do NOT state that people are not allowed to make comments. My statement is that comments without content do not improve the result. I applaud all criticism good or bad that will improve the end result because that is what open source is all about! _________________ Smaug: Sun Netra T1 105, UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz, 512MB, 2*36GB 10kRPM; 2 Sun Netra D130: 6*36GB 10kRPM, swraid 0

To round up this thread (I'm not in any way affiliated with this stuff but saw that the announcement was not yet published here.)
The original pictures are now available at http://its-maselli.de/pre_download_gentoo.php
Here are the licence requirements:
- The original pictures are being published in their original size.
- The original pictures include IPTC information about the photographer and the model.
- The original pictures may be modified for wallpaper creation. [Editor's Note: This is probably meant in the sense of "exclusively for wallpapers"]
- The original pictures must not be published. [Editor's Node: This is probably supposed to refer to re-publication on any other site.]
- The wallpapers must be approved by the model before publication.
- The finished wallpapers have to be mailed to info@its-maselli.de
- After the approval of the model the wallpapers will be published.
- The initial publication takes place on http://www.its-maselli.de
