I recently made an online database for compile times of various packages (all I got installed) and all CPU's I own or have gentoo installed on.

To access the database, go to http://gentoo.linuxhowtos.org/compiletimeestimator/ or use a genlop patch found in Bug 157103 or on the site itself.

To make it more attractive, there need to be a lot more CPU's in the database.

So if your CPU is not yet listed there, please consider sending the infos my way.
To do that, please follow the instructions on the site.

Thanks to those, who already sent their infos and to those who will.

This is a work in progress, so check back if your CPU is not listed (or contribute ;) )

@moderator: please move this thread if you think another forum is better suited

That is actually a neat idea, i was just thinking about something like this a few weeks ago.

Another neat feature (which I emailed to the email address on the site) would be to reverse to search order, to where you choose the application and it shows you compile times on all the processors. Would be nice if you are in the market :)

Great idea, the only problem is that scrolling on this site works painfully slow on my system (P4 2.53, 512MBram, firefox-2.0-r1) :?

Are you taking into account differences in compile time related to USE flags?
Obviously extra functionality included with different USE flags can skew the numbers for comparison.

Should probably also take into account memory usage/size, and possibly disk drive/speed if you want it to be more accurate.

Thanks for the feedback.
to answer some questions:

USE Flags, memory and disc speeds are not taken into consideration.
This might skew the data a bit, but given that it does not matter much
if you got 512MB or 2GB of RAM or the disc is a tiny bit faster it should
not matter for the big picture.

There are other factors that change the compile times much more, like
running blender while compiling or compiling with a high nice level while
working in a desktop environment.

USE-Flags might make a stronger difference but if there are 2 or 3 times
from different boxes with different flags, it will be an average of real flags
used on live system.

@insanity5902:
thinking about that.
Will be included in the browse portage section (info on the ebuild) (sometime this week)

@tboloo:
This is the fault of firefox, somehow it has trouble with rendering the page on linux. The non-linux (you know which) version works fine.
All other browsers (on linux) work fine.
Its the background image (the blue gradient). Gonna turn that off when viewed on firefox for linux .

@Zepp:
It can't and never will be 100% accurate, but is it really that important if it takes 20 minutes and the site said 18 minutes 50 seconds? :)

It was slow on my Firefox also ...

I don't know if you changed the page yet, but all I did was re-compile firefox with moznopango and there was a huge speed difference now. The site scrolls with the best :)

Try exporting MOZ_PANGO_DISABLE=1 and the run firefox, see if that speeds it up.

not sure if it will work the same but open up a command prompt and type 'set MOZ_PANGO_DISABLE=1' and then re-open firefox.

I implemented something like that, it shows your CPU (selected via drop-down box or via preselection).

Hopefully the system will know about most CPUs in use today, showing all simply would blow up the page without actual benefit.

If you want to compare the CPUs in compile speed, just check the ordering of the checkbox, they are sorted by compile speed :)

small bug, I goto mozilla-firefox/firefox and have it show me the compile time for the Intel T7600 it says 40 minutes ... in fact is should be 20 minutes.

No matter which processor I choose, the value stays at 40 minutes (both in the browse portage and compiletimeestimator)

Problems fixed, thanks for reporting.
