I downloaded the latest (no experimental) LiveCD for IA64 and tried it out
with this earlyitaniumws i2000 from HP.

CD boots fine, but with network adapter (e100) there is problem. Also seems
to be with usb_storage.

Here is dmesg, ifconfig -a and lspci to find out, if someone can help me - at
least to say "throw it to seagulls".

Code:
livecd root # dmesg

Ok. No serious interest?

I tried Debian ia64 installation and it did ok. It was Official netinst image.
It didn't choke with network.

Any ideas, how to get Gentoo f. IA64 to start the installation?
How to configure the network adapter?

This looks like an Itanium 1 box (guessing from the illegal instructions). Gentoo only supports Itanium 2.

I'd suggest using debian if that works or maybe trying to bootstrap Gentoo using the debian installation cd.

Just a question about these register dumps.
Some time ago I did some assembly programming on an Itanuim 1 (Merced) machine, and that time I learned that IA64 has 128 int and 128 fp registers, but the dumps only show the first 32 int registers.
Why?
I am asking because on my PA-RISC 1.1 machine, all 32 int and 32 fp registers get dumped.

You only use the first 32 registers directly, the remaining registers rotates (functions like a stack) normally. See http://nicewww.cern.ch/~sverre/IA64_1.pdf for lots of details.

Tthanks for the documentation link, but I already knew the register stack engine, and I have already seen code using rotating registers, I was just wondering, that, in contrary to other machines, not the whole register file got dumped as you can alloc the other 96 registers if you desire to do that...

Hello Kloeri.

I don't really remember, and HP pages speaks only of Itanium-workstation.

Well, I started to give a try via debian installation. I just installed a disk for it at work,
so at tuesday some more "job" to do... =)

Is there any manuals, what to do? For IA64 I mean.

Almost month has gone since last update. Some problems with Debian-distro, while playing with it too much.. =)
So here's where I am:

- Installed Gentoo system with chroot via Debian (not bad idea at all, can search piece of information from www
same time).
- compiled kernel couple of times, which ended up to error blaming something about mem_something.
- used kernel-configuration from Debian and stripped it a little (unnecessary drivers away and modules to drivers)

Got: booting system, which gives..

.. when booting, but it runs up and network works fine.

It says, it's:
Linux version 2.6.16-gentoo-r3_hp_i2000_ (gcc version 3.3.2 20040119 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r7, propolice-3.3-7)) #10 PREEMPT

With framebuffered console it has strange behaviour. Cursor is located somewhere on the
screen. It can be found every now and then, but usually it's off. I can type and do things
without it, but editing without cursor is a little painful.

I start to install gnome in now via Debian, so let's see on monday, what it has. =)
