PostPosted: Thu May 11, 2006 7:54 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] direct rendering gone Reply with quote

Hi everyone,

How shall I put it..? I broke my computer's direct rendering and dont know how. One week ago it still worked. Then I did
emerge -u --deep world && revdep-rebuild without regarding what is new and in the meantime I tried grub instead of lilo (which has probably nothing to do with it) and now direct rendering is gone. If anybody of you sees my direct rendering: please tell it I am sorry ! I have not changed xorg.conf or so.

I don't find the error.
Please help :cry:

this is quite simple to fix, but a pain to find. i eventually figured it out. the default location for Xorg modules appears to have changed as of modularx 7, and now seems to be in "/usr/lib/modules". what i did (correct me if im wrong here folks) was to add an additional modulepath referencing the above path, which set me on the right track. i think leaving the original one in place is worthwhile just in case theres modules in there that you still need.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunatly it didn't help.
Xorg.log shows that he is aware of both module path now but direct rendering ist still "No".
I have to say that my whole config already worked with modularx7 (before the emerge -u --deep)
I rather have the impression that it updated something else like Mesa, DirectFb, anything.
What can it be ?

have you upgraded your kernel recently? it may be worthwhile checking under graphics in a recent 2.6.16 kernel and compiling the correct modules like agpgart, drm etc, and ensure they're in your modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 in the correct order. i have savage working on this laptop and it was a pain to get working in Xorg6.9, but now 7 is here its much easier.

I ran a >genkernel all< on a 2.6.16-r3 recently.
Nevertheless I don't believe too much that the kernel causes the problem.
This config already worked before the emerge -u. It worked with my 2.6.13 and everything.
Now it does not with 2.6.13 neighter 2.6.16-r3. In both cases the modules autoload correctly in the same way it did before. :?

Can it have to do with permissions of the device file?
from Xorg.0.log:
Code:

PostPosted: Mon May 15, 2006 12:27 pm    Post subject: it is getting weird Reply with quote

I still have the same problem
but now I have observed something very weird.
When xscreensaver turns on: Some of the screensaver animation with openGL run obviously accelerated. Like Tangram, Jumping Cow, Molecules, Queens and some others. Other screensaver animations with openGL are slow like expected. Like Timetunnel and ANT and others..

I have no proove but it must be accelerated. Queens, Tangram, Molecules and some others run completly smooth. But Timetunnel shows only ~1 frame per second..
Or could this be the processor (2.8GHz) ?

glxinfo still says "direct rendering: No"

PostPosted: Wed May 17, 2006 12:19 pm    Post subject: how to unmerge everything around libGL* ? Reply with quote

I think I know why it is my fault. Somebody on the xorg-list (freedesktop.org) made me try
Code:

ldd $(which glxgears)|grep libGL

that says:
Code:

        libGLU.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libGLU.so.1 (0xb7eb9000)
        libGL.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libGL.so.1 (0xb7c3f000)

I then remembered that I installed CVS-Mesa (configure, make, make install) once.
This just worked until the moment when I did the next "emerge -u --deep world".
I know that the original gentoo Mesa should go into /usr/lib/libGL.so and not /usr/local/lib/libGL.so

I have two MESA versions installed and this causes my problem.

My question is now:
How do I purge everything to restore the original situation ?

(Just "emerge unmerge mesa x11-xorg" && rm -f /usr/local/lib/libGL* && emerge mesa x11-xorg"
or do I need more ?)

No config modification was made.
After just updating (emerge -u --deep world) with another xgloverlay I have direct rendering back.
It is by far not that fast as it was once before the whole story (this topic) began (glxgears now ~ 350 ; before: ~ 600...700)
but at least direct rendering says: YES.
Obviously everything about mesa, i810 etc is still far away from 100% functional. I fear the next update 8O

hey moxa,
I hope i'm not spoiling your monologue... but at least I'm finding it very interesting - I ran into exactly the same problem. Except that my whole kernel is broken everytime I emerge mesa now...

So I was just wondering if you've found a solutiong for this...

Hi moxa!
I have the same problem - from your logs it seems I have the same board and grapphic card (from intel).
But since you dont know how to solve it, anyone else can try to help?

Hey mathio,

Still same here:
Code:

$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20050225 x86/MMX/SSE2

and
Code:

$ glxgears
5932 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1176.985 FPS
6240 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1242.753 FPS
6000 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1179.406 FPS
6000 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1185.974 FPS
5880 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1173.470 FPS
5974 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1179.396 FPS
5986 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1183.047 FPS

Here it is like this:

Quote:
le-papillon mathio # glxgears
1592 frames in 5.0 seconds = 316.216 FPS
1440 frames in 5.0 seconds = 287.820 FPS
1560 frames in 5.3 seconds = 293.575 FPS
1440 frames in 5.2 seconds = 274.789 FPS

So lucky you :) I'm gonna checkout that thread you linked to as soon as my other compilation jobs are done - i can't reset KDE ;)
