Hello
After some heavy usage of firefox (many open windows and tabs, and way lot of memory consumption), sometimes a frame of the site i am on is detached. It has the title "untitled window" (ironic, ha! ). I can click in it, but most of the time it freezes. If i close it, firefox crashes. I think it is not a firefox issue, cause the same thing happened with epiphany.
To give you a better idea of what i am talking about look at this image. |

epiphany and firefox use the same renderinng engine (nammely Gecko), so this could be Geckoo specific. Have you tried Konqueror or Opera ? |

I' m using epiphany right now, but as i cannot reproduce the problem (it happened randomly) i am not sure if it works or not. Although using epiphany isn 't a real solution for me, cause i really like firefox and i am used to it.
This problem only happens to me??? |

Thank you!!!
I am not at all familiar with submiting a bug and i started to dispair because i thought i was alone here. To me, it happens very frequently at least 1 - 2 times per day. Maybe you can add the data i posted previously on Bugzilla. |

Files or posting to a bug is very much like using a forum(such as this one). I would suggest that you create an account and replying to mine, its easy. |

Any solutions here? It's happening here as well, on one of the two computers I frequently use. I see that both my "problem computer" and both your computers has MAKEOPTS="-jN" where N >= 3. The unaffected one has MAKEOPTS="-j2". |

well im bumping this just to say "me too" cos this problem is annoying.
Only info I can provide on the problem is that it happens to me after firefox has been open for a few days, then the problems start, also something else that happens as well is that sometimes a page wont quite load properly, the title text will load but the page will still be displayed as the previous, an f5 will fix this. Firefox will normally crash soon after these problems start to happen too.
My only guess is that its a memory related problem which is why it happens to me after firefox has been opened for a while with heavy use, I do have an awful lot of tabs open too which im sure doesnt help matters. |

What does your MAKEOPTS say? What kind of CPU do you have? Does it have two cores or hyperthreading? I'm guessing it has something to do with multiple CPUs along with memory usage, though I have no idea how to pinpoint exactly where the bug is. When it screws up here, my memory usage is nearly full (used+cache+buffers). I have 2 GB RAM, so used memory alone is never high, but it happens when the cache has occupied the rest.
When did it start happening for you? Just suddenly over night, after a big upgrade, or after a fresh install? For me, I had been using this computer for a long while, no problems. Then I had a fresh install, and it started happening right away. Kernel 2.6.16 -> 2.6.18. Not sure about the other various packages, but the firefox version didn't change. I used to have both firefox and seamonkey, but only firefox after the fresh install. Have any of you tried seamonkey? I'm going to install it and test...
Do you do something specific when firefox crashes for you? It crashes if I close the "Untitled window" of course, but now and then crashes when I try to load some new page. ctrl+tab for new tab, fill in url, press enter, and bam, firefox just closes itself. It doesn't happen alot, and I'm not sure if it's related or not. Anyway, please post your output of "emerge --info".

Im on a dual opteron system (x86-64), so you may be right about the multiple cpu thing. My memory usage is always pretty high with firefox partly from the sheer number of threads I have open (65+) and the amount of images I tend to view.
Im not sure if this helps but 2 weeks ago I did an emerge world for the first time in 6 months, the problem didnt exist then as much as it does now. Before the upgrade firefox would last longer and most of the time it would just simply crash, which I put down to running very low on memory as it was using around 1gb and X was using another 700MB. Actually one thing I must say is that firefox uses a lot less memory now than it did before, now it peaks at about 400MB, X seems to use less memory too.
The crashes happen as soon as I start to load a webpage and it always happens soon after the mystery windows start appearing, which im sure is related. I can pretty much reproduce this 100% by reloading my saved session, browsing the web for 3-4 days and then boom, mystery windows start opening, which tends to go away if I leave that tab alone and start browsing in another tab and then boom, it crashes, then the process starts over again.

As discussed in the bug report link posted by nukem996, I tried recompiling Firefox 2.0.0.5 with the +moznopango use flag. I've seen no problems after 3 days. |
