Hey all, I have been having the error LED on my Sun e250 server ever since I got it. When I purchased the server on eBay the guy mentioned that one of the power supply fans didn't work. But both fans power up fine and all 3 120mm fans inside spin up fine as well. Here the boot up error I get:

Code:

I just don't have any experience with the sun openboot system so maybe I could get some help here narrowing down this issue. Thanks!

Per the manual that test:
SUNW,envctrltwo@14,60000

Verifies that the fans are operational. Checks that the temperature in the enclosure and at the CPUs does not exceed the maximum allowable range. Also tests the disk and front panel LEDs.

Check all fans in the system to make sure they are operational.
The E250 should have come with 2 power supplies. Pull one out and boot up again. if it doesnt fail, then you know which one is bad.

One of the lights should turn orange if no power is supplied to one of the power supplies.

Well the system will boot up with both power supplies separately. So I know both supplies are good. I haven't tried looking at the boot-up messages for each though to find out which one is complaining yet though. As for the fans, all 3 120mm fans in the middle of the case are running fine and both REAR fans on both power supplies are running. I was just wondering if anyone knew which fan is supposedly failing.

DEVICE : /pci@1f,4000/ebus@1/SUNW,envctrltwo@14,600000
FRU : motherboard, power_supply, fan, CPU

Also the system runs fine and doesn't have a high temperature at all. I've been running it for quite some time now without any problems. I just hate the yellow LED in front!!! I will try booting the machine completely with each power supply individually to see if only one will whine about the problem. If I do narrow down the problem to one power supply what can I do to stop it from whining? Is there any chance there's another fan inside the power supply that I don't see that's failing??

Thanks for the response!!

the yellow led may be a separate issue. the linux kernel doesn't have the drivers to handel the daig pannel on a enterprise system. but my E250 and E450 have the top middle yellow led on at all times. and it turns off in solaris. there was a guy who had a hack to make them work somewhat right, but apparently the pannel is related to the harware monitoring subsystem and it is incompatible with the linux kernel too. something about not distinguishing between needing to shut down nicely for hardware problems and emergency turn off for overheating. search on google.
