Hello,
My apologies to the admin if this is off topic or if its not ok to post something like this here.
This is my first post on Gentoo forums. I just wanted to pop in and say thank you. I installed Gentoo on an old pc as a test before I tried on my better machines. The machine I installed on is a Compaq Deskpro P2. With an upgrade main HD to run the os and other PCI upgrades like eth0, sound & video cards. I tried the first time to install with the old version 2005.1 but was running into all kinds of problems. I decide to try 2006.0 and the GLI gui installer. What the hay if it failed I could install manually. Well 36+ hours I left it running. It seemed to hang at times but the HD light kept blinking so I knew it was doing something even thought the progress bar never really moved. Well after the 36+ hours Gentoo installed with all the extra packages w/o failure or errors. This was well worth the wait. I am very impressed with everything so far. The Handbook and these forums have helped me with every problem I have had so far on packages I forgot to install.
Thank you!!!

At least your first post wasn't "Why im dropping my recommendation of gentoo" or "Im thinking about leaving gentoo." _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

I think I'll piggy back my thank you also on this thread instead of creating a new thread . First post for me also.
I have installed gentoo on a couple of machines a few times ( includes a few botched installs) and am pretty familiar with it ( I probably can do it without reading the handbook ). I have found the documentation to be excellent and the forums helpful. I found answers to all my questions on gentoo wiki and forums without having to make a post .
I think gentoo is probably easier to use than some other distros out there. The system is simple and efficient. Its tolerant to screw ups. Its the only distro I think where I the 32 bit apps work so well along with the 64 bit ones. A downside might be the the long compile times, but I dont mind that since my system can do that when I am at work.
In short, Thank you devs and forum contributors. Without the community this would not be such a great distro.
BTW I am running a ~amd64 system on my desktop. The 2 OS's on it current are gentoo amd64 and an older gentoo x86 (stable) install. So I am completely Windows free |

emerge_myself, welcome aboard also.
PS - Don't feel obligated to be "windows free", I wouldn't want to be without my XGL!!! _________________ Jorge.
