Have you upgraded any packages? What print driver do you use? do you use any drivers from gimp-print?

I recently had an issue of a printer suddenly not working and I couldn't figure it out until I noticed that gimp-print had downgraded to an older unwanted version while installing gimp.

We need more info

Same problem here... yesterday it worked fine, today it doesn't. Did a normal emerge -puvDN world last night... I notice some KDE packages were upgraded so don't know if that's related...

Printing is a business-critical function...

cheers, Ian

Did you run dispatch-conf or etc-update?

etc-update as per normal.

Have not used dispatch-conf before (okay, so I'm still a newbie.. :-) )

cheers, Ian

On the 19th of April I upgraded the following:
sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.14-r7 > sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.14-r8
net-print/foomatic-db-20050606 > foomatic-db-20050910
kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.2-r2 > kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.2-r3
sys-apps/slocate-2.7-r7 > sys-apps/slocate-3.1
kde-base/kwin-3.5.2-r1 > kde-base/kwin-3.5.2-r2
kde-base/konsole-3.5.2 > kde-base/konsole-3.5.2-r1
media-video/transcode-0.6.14-r3 > media-video/transcode-1.0.2-r2
vmware-workstation-5.5.1.19175 > vmware-workstation-5.5.1.19175-r3
I guess the problem is either with baselayout or foomatic-db, but what? I can't make any sense of the cups error log.
I'm also running an AMD64 system.

Ok in the cups error.log I noticed this:
D [21/Apr/2006:00:36:32 -0500] [Job 4] /usr/lib64/cups/filter/foomatic-rip: No such file or directory
So guessing the problem lies with foomatic-db I masked 20050910 and tried returning to 20050606
However, trying to emerge foomatic-db-20050606 gives me this error and now cups won't start at all!

Ok fixed it after a lot of messing around downgrading foomatic-db and remerging cupd didn't work. Then I found this post:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-383818-highlight-lib64+cups+filter+foomaticrip.html
So the solution is to re-emerge net-print/foomatic-filters

Thanks... emerge -C foomatic-filters then emerge -uvDN foomatic-filters fixed it for me too..

You've been promoted to Hero status ;-)

Cheers, Ian

I re-emerged foomatic-filters without unmerging anything, and I can now print again.

Same here.
This ebuild should not be in stable branch with such a big bug IMHO !

Looks like the update to net-print/foomatic-db caused this problem. The last world update I did had this in it and my printer worked fine just before I updated. Thanks for the quick fix on this! I probably would have missed net-print/foomatic-filters if I had tried to re-emerge every package related to cups and printing. I guess a revdep-rebuild would have fixed this also...

Well that is crap. Guess the ebuild for foomatic-db needs to be edited so it rebuilds foomatic-filters.

Well, revdep-rebuild didn't fixed the problem. This one was very frustrating. I googled and tried many things. I finally found this discussion thread. I was about to re-emerge all printing stuff without being convinced it was the thing to do. :(

I am lucky enough to have plenty of hairs, so I can lost few on this one.

Agreed. (or at least a noted bug?)

Another entire site fixed over here. Cheers.
