UPDATED: SOLUTION IS USE "noapic" kernel parm when booting if you experience problems witha via-rhine or networking eth cards :)

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Gentoo in a AMD Ahtlon 64 (3200+) with 1GB RAM DDR 400Mhz.

The problem is that I can't find a CDLive that works fine to begin a Stage2 installation on my system, sometimes the CHROOT does crazy things (it's annoying!), in example:


  • chroot: cannot run command `/bin/bash': Exec format error
  • chroot -> /bin/bash not found: bash exists in this location and has permissions correctly set, strace doesn't helps with this.


...and sometimes is unable to load my ethernet card or setup my eth0 (I do it by hand - of course - but...)

Media used since now:

# Gentoo universal installer 2006 (big one)
# Knoppix Lite 3.1
# CD Live Ubuntu amd64 (dapper live ...)
# Gentoo-based distro cd-live (32bits) with Fluebox.

Also, there are a lot of problems with my USB Keyboard and Mouse... I have used Gentoo with no problemas in arch x86 (AMD Athlon XP 1600+) but now you can see I'm having some problems I hope to get solved with your APPRECIATED help :)

The idea is find something Live! to make a chroot correctly and to navigate, talk, and so on... while compiling, you know :-)

Someone can help me with this issue ? any advices?

Are you using 64-bit boot cd?

Are you using 64-bit tarball?

Is there an inconsistancy somewhere in there?

The CDLive universal installer is for AMD64 of course, the Ubuntu Live too... all except Knoppix Litle and the other (explicit) one.

All is consistent I think, the tarball is for amd64, the cdlive ...

why, i should be apoligizing for asking ! but i make lots of dumb mistakes and need to be reminded... not to mention not living in a country where people bother to learn more than one language ; )

that's erally wierd that you would be unable to do the install, especially if i read you right in

If so, I think it may be something to do with hardware, specifically your motherboard.

Could it be extremely rare, or using hardware with known problems, or something? If you wouldn't mind posting your hardware, i'd love to look it up

also: are you sure you want to do a stage 2? from the handbook,

I did amd64 stage3 and am very happy with the results. You can 'emerge -e system ' later, anyway;

oh, yep... you're right. (jeje i'm from Barcelona, I know more than one native language in my case xD)

Yes, something rare with the chroot enviroment, but when this problem become solved there's no reason to think about "install or hardware problem".

I don't think so.

About the Stage... it's doesn't matter because the problem is that I can't set a sane chroot enviroment to proceed, anyway, if something else goes wrong I'll try with a stage 3, I saw the Faq you mention, it seems to expose a Stage 1 since it's bootstrapping the system... In stage 2 (this can be wrong but I think it's correct) it's not required to bootstrap, as we know Gentoo guys did it for us.

Anyway, I think it's ok to use Stage 3, but I need to get a chroot (and of course, network, usb keyboard and so on) working fine before start the installation, I get mounted /dev/hdcX in /mnt/gentoo /mnt/gentoo/boot /proc,etc. but the CHROOT fails. I can't continue :S and it's annoying belive me :P

have you tried chroot without /bin/bash at the end? It really isn't necessary.

also, I believe you want to populate the root partition before you chroot. if you are trying to do it afterwords, maybe that's the problem

post your dmesg, if you want me to help diagnose your usb/network problems as well.

My latest try: an AMD64 Kubuntu (Live) that seems to load my ethernet card, shows the X-Window OK, solves my keyboard problem but cannot give me REAL NETWORK functionallity, I tried by hand with no success. Anyway:

I'll try it again and I again until it works fine so... it's annoying, my other stage1 installs with 32-bit gentoo were perfect with an AMD-Athlon XP 1600+ now I run Gentoo installer but there's no way to setup mynetwork properly, I also installed my old ethernet card (8139too.ko) and used ifconfig instead of anything else automatic, but ... network is unreachable and there's no firewall, damaged cables or similar cause the network as you can see it's ok.

that's so wierd... i can't figure it out. All these wierd hardware problems,. it makes me strongly favor a diagnosis of 'hardware problem'

have you tried resetting the bios?

network didn't work huh? that's funny. I could help you if it think it would accomplish something, i've some networking.

I had no problems with 64 bit either - no big ones at any rate, and nothing on the install step.

Sorry if i misunderstand, but you could try a manual stage3 install for gentoo. But maybe you already did this.

I am quickly running out ouf ideas my friend. It just "doesn't work"

The problem of CHROOT it's now ok, but the network doesn't works, it works only when I try with the Knoppix Lite 3.1 with NO problems but I can't do a chroot there, the only way is to get (or build) a Live CD [64bits] and get the network working, look at this:

I've installed another PCI ethernet 8139too-based chipset but... this does not helps.

Any idea to get my network ready or cd-live that works GOOD for my purpose ??

Tested by now:

Knotix 64 bits: network fails, chroot OK
Knoppix lite 3.1 32 bits : network OK chroot fails
Ubuntu 64: chroot ok, networking err, desk err
Kororaa: just for fun
Gentoo Universal installer amd64: chroot ok, network none
Kubuntu amd64: desk ok, network down, chroot ok


Resolv.conf tests with:

namserver 192.168.1.1 (GW)
... 80.58.0.33
... 62.151.2.8
... 80.58.0.97

I'll continue trying it. Any advice ? Thank you!

how do your packets go to the internet? Can you look up servers? can you do anything with your network cards? Are you sure --sure-- they don't work?

I would love to see what happens when you do a 'route' command and also a 'ping www.google.com' or something ( ' destination host unreachable' ? 'no route to host' ? )

Can you resolve names?

Can you run dhcp? (dhcpcd in gentoo, probably dhclient in others)

I think we might be able to get your netwok up. Where is your network? Is it a home network? If so, maybe it is your fault. If it is someone else's network, maybe it is their fault.

If we could fix the network problem, we wouldn't need to worry about which cd you needed to use. That's where i would focus for now. I understand that you're probably pretty frustrated but it may be something totally trivial.

Please get back to me with route. I may have some ideas for you.

I did everything you mention (except for traceroute) but sometimes host is unreachable and sometimes I get no answers, DNS resolutions seems to fail but this is not the real problem because I set some nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf to solve that, only my GW is needed in fact.

The hardware is ok since eth0/1 works fine when I run Knoppix 3.1 or another similar live system (32bits) or in a w*ws system 64bits.


dhcp gives me an absolute paranoia adress like 255.255.255.255.

I have a wireless 3com router, my connection is WIRED (I'm at home) and I have 2 more PC's wireless, DHCP service is ENABLE pool 2-7 with mac-fixed

The idea is to have an ethernet card with ip: 192.168.1.2 that can browse web pages or visit google XDDD then I'll begin to install Gentoo, seems simple but you can see, it's a shit of a bull (aka bullshit). Note: r00lz-fb8f6p8ss is my computer, with (now) 2 ethernet cards 1 of them disconnected from the router. No IP/Firewall filters applied to .2 or .5, lease time of DHCP is "forever".

I hope to get my network ready at once before, as I said this is really annoying... I'll continue trying it. (sic).

that is what my route command looks like.

as you can see, anything on the local subnet (192.168.1.0) is assumed to not need a gateway, which is true because they are on a switch. (eth0)
then everyting else goes thhrough 192.168.1.1 (davey.basement) which goes through eth0.

eth0 is going straigh into a swich on which is a computer 'forwarding the internet'
your router should work the same way. The thing is, your dhcp service should tell you this stuff.

consider this:

if there are any other computers on your network you could try pinging them. or try pinging the whole subnet with ping -b 192.168.1.255. Does that work? Then the gateway is probably 192.168.1.1 and that's probably all you need to do is route add default gw 192.168.1.1
if the ping to local computers fails, i am confused. DHCP worked no doubt on the other computers which looked like were connected to your cumputer. By the way, was that qoute from the 3com router's interface? I assume it was.

I don't know what is going on, but i think a workaround would be acceptable wouldn't it?

A few days ago i ran into a post on this forum; someone's laptop was extremely picky and would only work if the software was just right.

The situation may be the same for you.

By the way, I looked up your motherboard and the onlything useful i found was a person saying it took them forever to finally find the 'linux drivers' that came on the motherboard driver cd. Have you tried to use them ? I don't see how it could help...

Also, have you checked the configuration of other computers on the network and making sure their default gateway matches yours in 'route', their netmask matches yours in 'ifconfig' , and their ip address and yours seem to play nicely together. How do you tell, you ask? I do not know. All i am thinking is, maybe the 3Com Router won't recognize hosts added with the ip address configured manually.

I blame incorrect 'route' settings, or else the 3Com Router. Because both cards are up, and as you say they are tested and work fine, and because other people on the internet have sucessfully booted linux, these are my primary suspects. Have you tried resetting the router? There should be a small button somewhere.

Other than that, I just don't know. I haven't ever herard of a problem like this, although once or twice I was unable to boot from the minimal live-cd.

One other thing: you wouldn't necessarily have to be in a gentoo boot-cd environment to install gentoo on a hard disc. you could put the disc in a bootable linux computer and follow the instructions as if you booted of the cd. Just configure everything for the end system, and don't forget to configure the kernel especially for the end system, and maybe, just maybe, you could get it up and running.

The code you compiled might run even though the bootcd wasn't doing very well.

Reviewing your posts, i though of two things, one of which i touched on previously.

1) the ip addresses you selected are in the dhcp ' pool' , as you said. Perhaps you can't choose them statically.

and that led me to wonder

2) the static, manually assigned ip addresses may need to be added to the router configuration manually.

I get my problem solved :) I ran 64bits live with kernel param "noapic", and it works !!!

I saw this link: unixboard.de/vb3/showthread.php?t=10228 (in german, I don't understand nothing else but "gentoo mal mit -noapic gestartet" xDD and 'cause the guy answered himselfs I thought it was a solution.

Via-rhineII problem => -noapic :)
