I am curious, I'd like to allow my regular user to do emerge searches and other such commands, so that I can check program versions and such without having to su to root. However, I do not want to give FULL emerge capabilities to my regular user. I know I could get full privelidges by adding the user to the portage group, but is there a way I can allow my regular user to run emerge commands without the ability to install, remove, or update packages? |

I dont think so. You probably could do it with the alternative search programs for portage. |

A user who is in the portage gruop can do searchs and pretends but cant write to the / or to /usr/portage and such. They cant --sync even. _________________ An A-Z Index of the Linux BASH command line |

Thanks for the info, it looks like adding myself to the portage group will be all I need to get what I want. |
