I had trouble compiling 1.8, too, so I gave 1.9 a try. Here's the bad stuff:
Code:
make[3]:Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/graphviz-1.9/work/graphviz-1.9/tools/vmalloc'
mkdir -p ../../FEATURE
sh ../../iffe - set cc gcc   : run features/common > ../../FEATURE/vmalloc
iffe: gcc : not a C compiler: should compile 'int i = 1;'
make[3]: *** [../../FEATURE/vmalloc] Error 2
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/graphviz-1.9/work/graphviz-1.9/tools/vmalloc'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/graphviz-1.9/work/graphviz-1.9/tools'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/graphviz-1.9/work/graphviz-1.9'
make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: media-gfx/graphviz-1.9 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 36, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)
I did an 'emerge rsync' and updated gcc and glibc just in case, but it's still giving me this error, which is the same as the one I got with 1.8. I'm also pretty sure I saw this in another thread, but I can't find it. Anyway, is there anything I can do about this?

I got the same error. I'll just get the binaries and emerge inject the package.

I get the same message with lostirc, gtkmm, kde3.1.1 and others. Maybe it has to do with gcc 3.2.2, or am I way off?

This might be a long shot, but what does gcc-config have to say?

I'm not sure what to look for or what you're looking for but how's this:
# gcc-config --list-profiles
i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.2.2

Needs something else? Just ask.
