PostPosted: Sun Mar 26, 2006 5:54 pm    Post subject: could not open default font 'fixed' Reply with quote

I just did an emerge -u world and i upgraded to modular x. I can't seem to startx.
Keep getting this error :could not open default font 'fixed'. I've been googling for a while.
I don't use a font server and never have. I don't get any fontpath errors either.
Any ideas? This has been bugging me for hours. Thanks.

Here's is my log:

Try doing
Code:
LDFLAGS="" emerge --oneshot libXfont

To make this permanent, please do the following:

Code:
# LDFLAGS="`sed 's/-Bdirect*,//' /etc/make.conf | grep LDFLAGS`"
# echo -e "case \${CATEGORY}/\${PN} in\n    \"x11-libs/libXfont\")\n export ${LDFLAGS}\n        ;;\nesac" >> /etc/portage/bashrc

Might be a little dirty, but at least it works.

If you were referring to my command, try doing aldo_a's method.

Remove LDFLAGS="" from your make.conf. You are only supposed to do that on the commandline when emerging libXfont. Put back the LDFLAGS you had originally.

Remove /etc/portage/bashrc first. Then try LDFLAGS="" emerge --oneshot libXfont. Then start X.. This is the only problem that causes that error to my knowledge.

There was sth similiar some 2 weeks ago, are guys having font-misc-misc (one more was needed, look around for threads or bugs about this), try also reemerging some of the font pkgs.

I saw someething about that while googling earlier. Mentioned installing font-misc-misc and font-alias. I also installed other fonts:corefonts, freefonts. Nothing worked.

I am not sure is this is going to help u but try to do abit of a clean up concerning your fonts;

Remove these lines from your xorg.conf

Code:

    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/freefont/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
    FontPath   "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

and generally try to follow this howto from gentoo wikki http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_and_Fonts. Also u migth find interesting this one too http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg.

In the end do
Code:
fc-cache -fv

I saw someething about that while googling earlier. Mentioned installing font-misc-misc and font-alias. I also installed other fonts:corefonts, freefonts. Nothing worked.

Check if /usr/share/fonts/misc directory include several fonts.
Interestingly, I experienced the directory didn't include fonts.
At that time, the fonts had been installed to /usr/lib/X11/fonts/.
Basically, /usr/lib/X11/fonts should be linked to /usr/share/fonts, but it was not.
So, I moved the fonts from /usr/lib/X11/fonts to /usr/share/fonts, and then made a link.
That worked for me.

I am having the same problem. I have also tried the suggestions with out any success.
I install xorg-x11 7.0 some days ago. Previous version (6.8.2 and 6.9.0) of xorg works fine.
What should i do?

finally I could fix that..
problem was that libXfont.so.1 pointed to libXfont.so.1.5
therefore I got an error message trying to use bdftopcf.. which is used installing the needed fonts
At first I changed the link for libXfont.so.1 to libXfont.so.1.4.1 like it was originally for a fried of mine who did experienced that kind of problems which worked, but was allways rechanged within the process of emergin.. The final solution was just to copy libXfont.so.1.4.1 over libXfont.so.1.5, as this fried I have nerver had libXfont.so.1.5 I guess I won't be missing it..
Code:

cp /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.4.1 /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5

and remerging fonts made it for me..

That still did not help me. _loki_ where did you find this? I would also like to know where X has link for xorg.conf. For some reason, my X uses the backup I made in /root.

Please post
Code:

ls -l /usr/lib/libXfont*

xorg.conf is in /etx/X11/ if you put something there it should be used, also new xorg can use a autodetection when starting up..- so when older versions wouldn't start this one might come up..
