Well, I know it's a bit of a workaround, but it works well for me with no problems getting to the console or "blackscreen of no visuals".

I encountered a very, very similar problem (if not the same) when using fglrx in X and radeonfb on my consoles. This is a no-no, but unlike the nvidia-drivers there are few portage failsafes to keep you from accidentally doing this. You may already know this, but I would strongly suggest you switch fb-drivers and try disabling fb altogether before you give up.
If that doesn't work, try again during a new moon and use some burnt offerings in hopes of appeasing the ati-gods.
If you are unable to fix the problem, you'll save yourself some swearing and rebooting if you throw some
Code: | Option "DontVTSwitch" # Disable C+M+Fn
Option "DontZap" # Disable C+M+Bksp |
into your xorg.conf.
Good luck. |
