Hi,

just upgraded to xorg 7 now having a few problems with my fonts...
I saw that out of the bix they have left out many fonts - so I had to install bitstream vera for example...

Now I'm searching helvetica - because the installed version only has font size 10 and 12 but no 11 - which I use. The size above and below just look awful.

How to get my old helvetica back?

Are there any other 'important' font packages I should install or do I have to watch out for apps that don't look like they looked befor....

Ok after emerging xfontsel I see that I can choose helvetica with 11px but I cannot choose it within applications (I want it in licq)
I have no helvetica 11 font/file on the system - so why can I see it with xfontsel and why not with licq??

My best guess would be that you're looking at the Helvetica type1 font, which does indeed look like ass. There supposedly exists a better version of the font; I do not know in which package it is however.

Are you actually using Helvetica as a system font, or is it just that some applications (like Firefox) use it?

In case of the latter, you could try and install the corefonts package; it contains arial, which often gets used over Helvetica. You could also alias Helvetica to something else through /etc/fonts/local.conf, like I do.

My problem is that I do not want an anti aliased font - I tried a lot of TTFs for the licq interface and most of them just look blurred because of AA.
I loved the sharp edges of helvetica - easy to read (my opinion ;)

I now use verdana which is the best choice so far...

Yeah, after reading your post again I kinda figured.

You actually want to use Helvetica  .

Can't help you with that I'm afraid.
