That's the most hilarious boot loader I've ever seen. An exploit of a save bug in a game...

Hey ShALLaX, does your release include the new fatx drivers? I also had gentoo running fine, chrooting outta Ed's old distro, but lost my rootfs due to fatx corruption. So I'm keen to know if your distro has the newer code before downloading it.

Cheers, and thanks for the good work!

I think its great that you've managed to get this working. Im now seriously considering buying an xbox just to run gentoo. This would be especially good as the price has just been cut again, and its already heavily subsidised by Microsoft! (an xbox is almost a better spec than the pc i'm using now - bargain! :D )

The pro version sounds like it would be best for me, but I am wondering whether it is possible to install completely from scratch. shallax can you give very brief instructions on how you do this? also what mod chip would you recommend or would you wait for a non mod chip method?

thanks

Golias

When i downloaded GentooX the there was only one iso...now there are two. What is the difference between Home and Pro??

Also, what is the driver you need to make xfree work, just nvidia-kernel?

PostPosted: Wed May 14, 2003 1:37 pm    Post subject: Fatx issue on large drive Reply with quote

I have an 80gig drive in my xbox, and while drives c e x y z are all the same size as a "standard" xbox, my f drive is around 70gig. When I mount the f partition using fatx I get some strange results. First there are several "file not found" errors when listing the root of the partition, and also if I change into one of the directories on the drive and list, I find nothing there (when there is quite a bit there)

Any ideas ?

With the latest patches to gentoox, Everything is working excellent on my xbox. The magic system is working pretty good now.
Since I don't have a keyboard, and can't stand X on a small screen (I use 2 21" monitors in 1600x1200 for my working system) I simply ssh into the xbox for all my work there. Sound works fine, Now that the system is stable I need to find something to do with it ... Maybe a linux dashboard ???

I still don't get the thing about the mod-chips. Do you have to open up the X-box or something?? Maybe I'll understand when I actually get an X-box... :(

Yes you have to open the xbox.
There are 2 types of mod chips, ones that sit on the motherboard and use spring loaded pins and require no solder, and ones that have to be soldered to the board.
Prices are in the 40 - 70 range (US$)

Forgive the obviously stupid question, but I have to ask ... why would you want to run Gentoo (or any Linux distro at all) on an XBOX? What's the point?

I'm just curious.

Duck-Billed Platypus,
Check out xbox-scene.com & xboxhacker.com (Lot's of good info there).

sdibb,
I use an XBOX for Mandrake because, There are no games out so instead of the xbox just sitting there I get some use out of it.

Just thought I'd post this bit of good news for XBox Linux users, it appears there is a way to get Linux installed and running without any need to open the box at all. Check it out.

Has anybody tried using something like WinTV PVR USB with an Xbox running Gentoo! Now that would be worth getting a complete multimedia station with HD recording!!!

http://dancevision.blub.be/genbox/ is a project by a friend of mine
(yes, site is in dutch)

basically its a project to get a collection of multimedia apps to work together on gentoo, and thus create a multimedia box

i wonder if this would run nicely on an XboX ...

on http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/
the xbox linux project :)
talks about gentoo on xbox :)

also, there mecinstaller lets you install without ANY mod chip.
It gives you the posibility to load a very toned down linux from the dashboard. From there install whatever linux you want. You can also use "livecd" linux like the http://www.geexbox.org/en/index.html

means once I get my usb memory stick and mechassault, I can use my ATI remote wonder on my Xbox :)

I just really wish there was something better then vesa support for video.

How well does the MythTV front end work? I imagine that the video would probably have some of the unpleasant "tearing" that you'll see in video that's not double-buffered, right?
