I'm planning on taking Sun up on the T2000 60day eval .. I'd like to try and make gentoo go on it .. has anyone else tried this?

Thoughts about potential pitfalls?

Nope, we haven't. Work is still being done to support the UltraSPARC T1 (AKA Niagra) CPU in the Linux kernel.

I'm curious if running a very generic sparc kernel would at least boot?
Thoughts?

Niagara is a completely new architecture, called SUN4V, so no.
David Miller (sparc kernel maintainer) is working on it, you can check his blog at http://vger.kernel.org/~davem/cgi-bin/blog.cgi/

I just about cried when I saw that boot log with 32 procs. And I thought my workstation with 4 procs was nice. I'd love to get my hands on one of those :)

Partitial quote from kerneltrap.org, announcement from Linus to lkml

http://kerneltrap.org/node/6435

Linux: 2.6.17-rc1

"The most notable change here might be the merged support for Sun's Niagara architecture"

As of a couple of days ago i've managed to conjure an experimental livecd that works on the T2000 @ http://dev.gentoo.org/~gustavoz/sparc/experimental/
You'll need to unmask vanilla-sources-2.6.17-rc2+ to get one rolling, all the other stuff is currently stable (like >=silo-1.4.11-r1). The livecd has /proc/config.gz support so you don't have to start from scratch.
Thanks go to pkessler & Pyretic on #gentoo-sparc for testing.

http://www.zolder.org/boot.txt for Pyretic's livecd boot.

Newly arrived server sitting under my desk, only problems unresolved are kernel related. I'll drop by #gentoo-sparc later and see if all you kind folks can't help me resolve them so I can get on with deploying this beastie.

Bootlog from the T2000 Sun kindly donated Gentoo.
I'm still trying to find out how to fill the 32G ram this beast has (it's the 8-core 1.2ghz kind).
Astinus: you'll need the latest experimental livecd to roll it sweetly.

Yes, too bad it's time to return it now. I didn't get to play with it as much as I would have liked to.
