i installed gentoo 2 months ago, because at the time i didn't care spending a few days setting up my whole system.
two months later, i'm tired to waste my time compiling whenever i wanted to try a new software.

gentoo is a very nice distro from many points of view, and i think i would have sticked with it if there were more binary packages in portage. gentoo has many good and bad points, no need to discuss them again.

i'm eagerly waiting for the next yoper (the current one is getting old but when i tried it 18 months ago i was very impressed by its speed)

in the meantime i switched to archlinux, which i like very much (quick install, fast, quite easy but bad docs). that should be it.

farewell, folks !

Bye, have fun.

See you back when you get a 32 core processor that compiles everything in less than 10 seconds. ;)

Bye! erm... I mean, who cares?
Those Threads are getting old.

If you're not happy with Gentoo then that's quite allright.
I didn't call Bill when I was leaving Windows either.

Just find what you're comfortable with. ;-)

My dual opterons do pretty well as it is B-)

Seriously, these c/o about compiling are pretty silly. Except for a few big apps most programs compile in under 15 minutes or so and once a package is emerged it's emerged. Updates are pretty much background jobs.

Heh, for me even my Pentium M 2 GHz and Athlon 2500+ are fast enough. I'm often surprised how fast stuff compiles on them compare to the hardware i've had before.

As for brazzmonkey, it obviously wasn't the right distribution, if he's not happy watching the compiler i can live with that. Instead of ranting and coming up with obscure ideas how we should fix his problems he made the right choice and went to find another distribution that fits his needs better. Hence, good luck and have a nice day.

I know what you mean. I still maintain an Athlon 2800+ I gave to my g/f which blew away the 1500+ it replaced. I guess my point was, if I had one, that with the speed of dual and dual core CPUs compiling most software doesn't take much longer than installing a binary anymore.

fluidportage :D try replacing all your apps with the fluidportage equiv.

or ... write a compiz plugin that shows a thumbnail of a minimized window when you mouse-over on the taskbar.

oh and ciao to whoever was leaving gentoo. best of luck in the land of lesser-distros ;)

Indeed... I was quite surprised when openoffice2 was compiled in ~4 hours on my Pentium M 1.8...

yesterday i experienced a major crash due to a power outage... my system has been heavily affected... luckily i should be able to get most of my personal data back, but about 85% of my system needs to be rebuild... my previous backup is about 1 month old, but many changes occured in the meantime.
i can't afford several days of compilation atm, i badly need my computer these days, so i'll go with archlinux, sorry... just one hour and got a fast, working kde installation... i don't think i'll mess around with gentoo anymore... my last world update ended with library dependency problems that took me a while to revdep-rebuild, especially because openoffice2 was involved (!) i don't care about compiling as long as my system is functional... but i'm not in the mood of starting over a new gentoo installation...
that's just too much for me... i quit...

still, i just became marked as "guru" a few days ago (even though i don't deserve this, i ask more questions than i give answers - i more like an experimented noob), and archlinux community is lightyears behind gentoo community... so i think i'll still wander on these skillful forums.

bye

Did you leave a message on the Arch forums telling them why you're leaving them?

I'm sorry. I'm being a little mean. I have a nasty cold at the moment.

You know, you could always dual boot, or if you need it in a hurry, get a copy of Knoppix until you have the time.

this discussion is actually 3-months old. 3 months ago i gave arch a whirl and liked it very much. i had a gentoo backup which i quickly restored when i realized i was addicted to gentoo. latest events lead to arch because ease of use and performance suit me. i don't want to spit on arch community, it's not as active as gentoo community but you can feel they are good-willing people.

i see the point of having dual boot when it comes, say, for linux and windows, i don't see it when it aims to have 2 linux distros (you mileage may vary, though).

more than any other distro, gentoo is pure geek stuff. and i think i am no longer at that level of geekiness... sorry folks...

give me a box that can compile kde and OOo and update world in less than half an hour, and i'm back to gentoo !
