Hi,

I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to Gentoo, having only just installed it this week and am very impressed so far. I like the idea of running something that's 'pure' in the sense that it hasn't been altered by - say - RedHat, Mandrake et al.

But I'm digressing here, my actual query is about ebuilds - and specifically ebuilds that are available in Gentoo's CVS repository. How do I go about using these? For example, I downloaded one for the final release of Mozilla 1.3, put it in /usr/portage/custom (having added this path to PORTDIR_OVERLAY in make.conf) and tried to use
Code:
emerge --pretend /usr/portage/custom/mozilla-1.3-r1.ebuild
to see if I could install it. Anyone with any experience of Gentoo will probably know that it didn't work!

The error I'm getting is
Code:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies \emerge: create(): aux_get() error on portage/mozilla-1.3-r1; aborting...

I know that messing with CVS is probably running before I can walk at this stage, but presumably the process is the same for other, new, ebuilds that may not have been added to the tree yet. I've searched the forums but have come up with nothing, so if anyone could give me any tips, it'd be appreciated!

Cheers!

in your /etc/make.conf you need to uncomment out the line that sets up the local portage tree. This is usually /usr/local/portage. Make this directory and any sub-dirs for the ebuilds you want ie(net-www, apps-editors) and put your ebuild in /usr/local/portage/net-www/mozilla dir. Then an emerge mozilla should do it.

That worked perfectly, cheers!

Just have to get it to compile with GTK2 now and I'm set for getting Galeon working...

Thanks again!
