The mouse tends to jump to the pointer position without reason while I am typing and also can do a double tap (middle button) and therefore insert some text that I have selected elsewhere. Sometimes I think this is because I am laying my palms on the notebook body near the touchpad but I am pretty sure I am not accidently touching the pad. Nor do I think that I am accidently brushing the pad when I get the mouse jumping elsewhere suddenly in my text block - very annoying!
Anyone relate to this?

So this is an Apple MacBook Pro and the touchpad is not too bad on the whole - I would like it to be more sensitive (like the IBM ThinkPad - beautiful touchpad) and somewhat more accelerated - that maybe just settings but its worth mentioning.
I find that the touchpad is not erratic in its movement until it just jumps!
Now I have heard that there is a way of disengaging the touchpad when typing but that this is slow when reengaging the touchpad - why have I never experienced this with my ThinkPad?

I'm using a Toshiba A45-S150. I have the same problem with it jumping, but it jumps to random locations while I'm moving it, instead of to the pointer when I type.
This doesn't seem to be unique to linux, but it may be a "feature" of synaptics/alps touch pads as my other computer, an HP zv6000 w/ WinXP, has the jumping problem as well.
Also, I had the same problem as you with the mouse moving a short distance for a lot of finger motion until I happened across this in the gentoo wiki at gentoo-wiki.com
Option "MinSpeed" "0.3"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.6"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0100"
Put that into your touchpad's section. Modify the values to get a feel for it, just passing on the warning that 1.0 = Very Fast.
