You, my good man, need to install a cvs version of glproto BEFORE xgl/mesa from >=20060312

this is mentioned in the README

virduk:
afaik you'll need libdrm from cvs.
I have this ebuild in my overlay: http://users.cybercity.dk/~dsl117957/jonls/libdrm-2.1_alpha20060313.ebuild

Your problem looks like a problem that I had earlier. This might help. At least it's worth a try.

EDIT: jonls beat me to it with an even better solution.

EDIT 2: The cvs libdrm ebuild is both on the XGL howto on gentoo-wiki.com and in the latest revision of coffeebuzz's overlay. Thanks again for the great work everyone.

Latest Compiz from CVS has the opacity function built in. Press Alt-Mousewheel to change opacity. Pretty cool. :P No seperate plugins to load either.

For the moment, I am running the latest CVS checkout of compiz with the paint_patch applied. Xgl and Mesa are both from the latest overlay. If ya got ideas, I'm all ears.

The problem with that paint_patch is that its a huge hack of a patch. It actually chops out some screen lighting functionality out of compiz (amoung other things). David R. submitted (what he thought) was a fix in xgl some time ago but people just reported today (march 13th) that they still expereience the same artifacts unless they use that paint.c patch. I pulled it out becuase I trusted David R when he said he fixed it heh, but I guess thats not what users are experiencing. I can toss it back in the latest cvs build of compiz but realize it disrupts the logical flow of the painting procedure and could have undesirable effects.

This patch is suppose to fix graphic artifacts for at least IGP345M and radeon 7500 mobility (r100) cards.

It seems a better patch for that was posted:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-March/013650.html

Unfortunately the latest Xgl code along with the unpatched compiz wasn't very stable and I ended up resorting to using that patch to run a very minimal Xgl session. I'll try some combinations a little later to see if that improved patch helps out.

This might be a silly question, but can I use the
Code:
kdelibs-3.5.1 ksystray patch
with kde 3.4 ? Its starting to annoy me that everything collects to the side instead of going to the tray :P

cheers

I have the exact same problem on an nvidia fx5500 on rev 65

Thats a nice little "how to" you just wrote above too.

Just an update:
The whiteness has gone away for me with rev 66.
Though now glxinfo / any (glxgears) crashes the server which wasn't present in rev60

I also have another question - this time about glxgears... I am runing xorg7 with compiz and all the effects on kde 3.4, when I run glxgears, I get 10000fps, but the strange thing is my cpu usage goes up to the 90% or so. Im sure glxgears is used to test if you graphics card is doing the work? I have a geforce fx 6600gt. I did another test, I shook a window around, with the wobbly effect, and my cpu usage went up to 40%. I am using the nvidia drive (the splash screen even show upon loading X). So why the high CPU usage?

Yay. It all compiled nicely. Thanks.

Getting it configured so it will work properly is another matter though.

I get to a point where upon booting I get a black screen and the pointer has become a clock, where it just sits unfrozen.

Hello,
From the README
Problem: CVS hangs?
Code:

Solution - Edit /usr/portage/eclass/cvs.eclass, find the line
   [ -z "$ECVS_CVS_COMMAND" ] && ECVS_CVS_COMMAND="cvs -q -f -z4"
and change -z4 to -z3, if it still doesn't work. -z2 etc etc.
   OR
downgrade cvs to a stable version

x.para: http://gentoo-wiki.com/XGL#I915_PARAM_LAST_DISPATCH_not_declared_in_kernel_DRM_headers

KHLOROSDAIMON:
open /usr/portage/eclass/cvs.eclass, find this line:
Code:
[ -z "$ECVS_CVS_COMMAND" ] && ECVS_CVS_COMMAND="cvs -q -f -z4"

and change -z4 to -z0.

I cvs upped today but I still have 2 remaining issues (though minor considering what stage this is at)

1) cursor tends to disappear from time to time (switching desktops randomly seems to bring it back temporarily) and leaves some artifacts on the active window

2) under heavy compilation a couple of negative side effects (a) desktop rotation, screen scrolling, and music play stutter (b) active window will fade to grey and back

Dual PIII-1Gs, 1.5G RAM, with swap and a gf3-ti500

Other than these very slick - anyone with similar issues / suggested fixes?

Have you tried the switch_all_desktops use flag? (I don't know if that will work with minimized windows or not)

This poorly named use flag makes the switcher only show apps on the ACTIVE workspace instead of ALL workspaces which is the default behavior.

Yes and I would espcially be able to let tab switch show all the windows, including minimized.

Can anyone tell me how to change the superkey (windows-key), because I have no windows key here fortunately ;)

Furthermore: How can I change the font size of the window titles? I'm not a gnome user, so where is it/or what app is it?

Thanks

PS: XGL is quite stable:
Code:
uptime
 18:03:09 up 1 day, 21:01,  9 users,  load average: 0.66, 3.60, 2.69

I finally got this running today (several hours of tinkering) and it ROCKS! I do have some minor glitches though, regardless if I run Xgl with Gnome / compiz (3D coolness) or KDE / kwin (no 3D coolness) over Xgl:

Hardware: Pentium M 1.3 gHz, 512 RAM, 32 VRAM nVidia GeForce 4200 Go, 1280x800

1. Direct rendering is reported off by glxinfo, unlike under xorg. Is this a problem and is there a solution to that?
2. Glxgears is SLOW. Now here's the funny part: it reports
Code:
10922 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2163.933 FPS

which is about twice as fast as what it reports on xorg, but the gears themselves move slowly and in a choppy manner. In contrast, they move extremely fast (if I disable double buffering) in xorg.
3. Videos are also slow. The only fast way to play them was under mplayer with -vo x11 or gl2, but both had inconsistent results in terms of speed / stability. Plus, I don't like mplayer and would much rather use Xine, which has practically only xv rendering.

If anyone could help, that would be very nice!

The apparent speed isn't a good indicator -- it's based on ratios of refresh rates and fps (and gear speed). If the graphics card is pumping out 2000 frames per second, the X server will only pick out a few of those to actually display (monitor refreshes being ~80Hz), these could be any along the way, leading to jerkiness. If you tuned it carefully, you could make the gears appear to be going backwards (like you see with bike/car wheels sometimes in films).

Edit: the thing to do is to check a game (or other app) for real-world performance.

I installed the new ati drivers 8.23.7 and activated the new full screen antialiasing feature. but sadly all i got was a completely distorted screen. FSAA togethe with xgl would really really rock!

Hey guys, I've installed Xgl and everything seems to be going really well. The only issue I'm having is that compiz doesn't seem to pick up my Gnome mouse settings. I get the defauly black X cursor everywhere except over a Firefox window. Additionally it is not picking up the speed adjustments I made to the cursor motion. Any ideas?

It seems to me that Xgl only gets CPU when the system is idle. For example, when I am compiling something, Xgl is extremely slow, only getting about 2-3 updates per second. As it can redraw the screen 50 times per second using only 10-15% CPU it wouldn't be a problem giving it more priority, but I don't know how to do it, because even running it with nice -1 it's still unable to get more than 2% CPU when the system is loaded.
I hope I made myself clear
Does anyone have the same problem?
Is there any way to solve it?

Thanks,

Xavi
