well i have 2.1 sound with my SB audigy LS but its VERY distorted its not if i turn it down but when i reset alsa it almost blows my speakers! lol but i finally have mic in! my cmedia 9880 didnt support it(alsa didnt) so i moved here and mic works but 5.1 doesn my front and center speakers dont put out sound and i know its not the card because my live! 24 bit does same thing. ive checked mixerlevels tried with modules and built in kernel alsa.. any pointers would help! and btw alsaconf detects my card.. thanks

if it's music you're worried about, fear not.
unless you're talking about multichannel dvd-audio or super-audio (very eclectic and poorly known niche) you're talking about 2channel sound. that is, sound that should ONLY be reproduced in the 2 front speakers. now, either with in-line crossovers or audio filtering done in the sound processor, you can get the sub to fire too. if you want any more than that, you're breaking the audiophile's first rule (using more speakers than channels), but alas, many people bought 5.1 systems and then realized music isn't encoded in that, so there's an overabundance of methods to use those speakers - 'though as an audio enthusiast, i must discourage all these methods - such as channel mirroring (stereo x2), ProLogic/ProLogic2 filtering (pl/pl2), and many variations there of. _________________ "but umm...why-...why's por--...why is port 31..337 open?..." |

supporting 5.1 and using all 6 channels are two different things. just because you don't hear sound comming out of the rear speakers doesn't mean that you don't have 5.1 "supported."
sound staging, volume ballancing, and accoustical directionalization all suffer when you filter/mirror a channel beyond more than 1 driver set. this is why it's frownd upon. however, if you insist on just getting the loudest bang for the buck, i suggest using using some sort of channel mirroring. (which i guarantee something like this was happening before). _________________ "but umm...why-...why's por--...why is port 31..337 open?..." |

so far as how to use those, i can't help ya. my interest in alsa extends only so far as the best quality 2-channel audio reproduction possible. _________________ "but umm...why-...why's por--...why is port 31..337 open?..." |

ITS NOT ALSA i just need to set everything for 5.1 and i dont know what device that would be! but i can select hw:0,3 hw:0,2 hw:0,1 hw:0,0 hw:0,0 is the output! (so are the rest) but i cant set ALSA to use all at once? or to copy stereo to all 6 channels... does anyone know how? mplayer has a 5.1 option but it freezes every time i play something XMMS doesnt use all it just uses one... so thats more info! thanks
is there a way to setup alsa so it playes all 6 channels?
and if you have any files that might help thatd be great! thanks |
