|
|
I've just recently installed modular Xorg by following the instructions in the official guide. However, I have hit somewhat of a snag. My xorg.conf is configure correctly, I am almost positive, but I still receive errors on startx.
Code: | Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/misc, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/100dpi, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed' |
Here's the thing: all of those directories contain fonts according to ls. However, misc does not contain "fixed," so that part of the error message is valid.
I've tried mkfontdir, and it doesn't help at all. I've tried re-emerging xorg, and it does not help either.
What I am asking is, how do I obtain the fixed font, and how do I get Xorg to accept those directories?
Thanks in advance! |

The font fixed is an alias, the aliases are installed by the font-alias package, which is a hard dependency of xorg, so you DO have it.
I am 100% certain i know what your problem is:
remove -Bdirect from your ldflags and reemerge X and the font related libraries
Also, reemerging the fonts might also be necessary...
To cheer you up: I've been there too, this week _________________ Retired gentoo user

You have guessed quite correctly, -Bdirect is in my LDFLAGS. I will remove it at once and do that emerging.
I appreciated the speedy response, thanks very much. |

Actually, you only need to emerge x11-libs/libXfont without the -Bdirect to get it to work. That's the beauty of modular xorg, no need to recompile the whole thing |

i've tried to emerge libXfont without -bdirect, but still can't startx as user, only root. Any other suggestions? _________________ A computers attention span is only as long as it's electrical cord (Murphy) |

Could you tell me exactly what you did to get it working?
I've tried all those suggestions none are working, gives me the same error as root & regular user. |

it was an error in the Conrad install overlay, had to edit bdirect out of /etc/portage/bashrc _________________ A computers attention span is only as long as it's electrical cord (Murphy) |

Despite remerging quite a lot of stuff (including all packages of modular x) with and without the mentioned ldflag, I did not get my X to work. I also tried "solutions" given in some other posts in the forum, but I'm stuck .
This is what I get when I do "startx":

I found out that 'mkfontdir' does not seem to work.
Code: | cd /usr/share/fonts/misc/
mkfontdir |
produces a fonts.dir file, but it's empty. Copying this file from another computer gets rid of the error message
Code: | Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/misc, removing from list! |
but the error
Code: | Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed' |
stays. |

In another post there was a problem with '/usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5'. I had fixed that, but somehow my computer rather wanted to use '/lib/libXfont.so.1.5'.
That helped:
Code: | rm -rf /lib/libXfont* |
