What does "file /usr/bin/sqlplus" say? And for the other binaries? |

You probably added the ppc keyword to those packages. The reason they're not marked ppc is because they're x86 binaries and will not run on ppc hardware. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

alex@localhost ~ $ sqlplus
bash: /usr/bin/sqlplus: cannot execute binary file
alex@localhost ~ $
firefox:
alex@localhost ~ $ firefox-bin
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 356: /opt/firefox/mozilla-xremote-client: cannot execute binary file
Unknown error 126 from mozilla-xremote-client
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 442: /opt/firefox/firefox-bin: cannot execute binary file
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (126)
alex@localhost ~ $
I suppose that the sqlplus is normal because i downloaded it from oracle but there are no binaries for linux ppc :-S (that´s a problcem for me). But what happens with firefox and openoffice? Can´t be used under linuxppc?[/code] |

Of course, if you install x86 binaries, it will not work. The -bin packages do not work on ppc because upstream does not provide binaries for ppc. You can either install from source or install the GRP packages provided on the pkg cds. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

No, it's not "that difficult" to compile binaries. However, the -bin packages that you're trying to use are the "official" upstream versions, not Gentoo compiled versions. We can't provide those unless upstream wants to distribute ppc versions. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Oh fair enough. But try as I might, I have not found a ppc binhost. Is there somewhere Gentoo PPC users can upload bins for others to download? I know people have hosted on their own websites before, but is there some place central?
thanks |

Aren't there official openoffice ppc binaries? (https://forums.gentoo.org//viewtopic-p-3267759.html#3267759) I don't really know much about Fedora, but wouldn't their bins be official enough? Sorry if I don't really know what I'm talking about. Does "upstream" mean "released by the project"?
My problem is, I really need openoffice, but I don't really have the space to compile it. In a few weeks I might be able to move around some harddrive space, but I'm kinda stuck using NeoOffice in OSX right now (yeah I know I could get OOo 2.0.2 through fink, but OSX's x11 is heinous). Would it be possible for me to use the Fedora packages?
thanks. |
