i have had Gentoo running fine for a few days with kernel 2.6.15-r1. This morning, I installed the ATI drivers using
Code:
aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I got back into X (startx) and checked to see if the driver install worked. It didn't. I logged out to go back to the command prompt, and re-ran ATI Config. Now, when I try to boot to X, i get a Kernel Panic error. I have restarted the computer, and it crashes every time X begins to load.

Hmm.. I've never had X give me a kernel panic before. Have you taken a look at your Xorg.0.log? What is your xorg.conf? Are you loading the fglrx module at boot?

I booted from the Live CD and deleted my xorg.conf file, and I was able to reboot and get into gnome without a problem. I'll try reinstalling the ATI drivers and see what happens.

EDIT

Now, when I run aticonfig, it says Warning: Could Not find configuration file. What should I copy into /etc/X11?

Wait... are you using the ati-drivers package that is in portage?

If so, configure it with: fglrxconfig. That will build your xorg.conf file.

Edit: have you take a look at this? http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml
