background:
i was sitting there updating gcc-3.2.2-r1 to r2 cuz i figured why the hell not, i was just watching cnn anyway. but i also had mozilla open and started up gaim. that's when the fun started. system froze hgard. total lockdown. had to hard reset. then booting up gave me something like this after it loaded /proc.

Code:
proc                                            [ ok ]
cannot rm /dev/.devfsd

and then it does the failed hda3 thingy with fsck.reiserfs saying i should do --rebuild-sb on the drive if i know it's a good partition. blah blah

so i use el livecd and try that. no dice. fsck.reiserfs --rebuild-sb /dev/hda3 gives me:

Reiserfs with standard journal found, but there was specified a journal dev

and yes, the language was written that way in the error. so i can't seem to fix the superblock, or figure out what caused this. the drive itself works fine when mounted from livecd.

can anyone help me? i was thinking of re-fdisking it, and then --rebuild-tree but i was hoping for something less risky

I just had the same problem. Right now I am checking the root with --fix-fixable from KNOPPIX.
Does your's work again?
