[FIRST PROBLEM]
Im not quite sure whats goin but UT2004 and Enemy territory are running at super speed and making the games unplayable.

Opteron 170 @ 2.4ghz
2Gb ram
7800 GTX
Sound blater live 5.1

Running Gentoo-Sources 2.6.15 and have tried No-Sources with the same result. Im running the last nvidia drivers

Im not sure what files I should include w/ this post. Im not getting any errors or crashing, every thing is just running way too fast.

I should also mention that Quake4-demo in contrast to the two above runs great, has one audio hitch on startup but runs like butter afterward.
[/FIRST PROBLEM]

=========================

[SECOND]
What is DMIX and why would I need it? ive seen the howtos in the wiki but dont follow that part of the alsa setup.
[/SECOND]

=========================

[THIRD]
Ive got cedega 5.0.1 installed and managed to install Battlefield 2 successfully however when I go to play it keeps telling me to insert a disc even if it is already mounted to I tell cedega to mount it. I have not patched it as I wanted to see if it would work before downloading 300+mb of patches. anyone know what im doing wrong?
[/THIRD]

========================

[FOURTH]
Can anyone point me to a guide on installing steam w/ cedega? I try to install it w/ that Steam-Install.exe but after it decompresses and such it says it cant find SteamInstaller.msi I dont care about CS i just wanna play half life 2.
[/FOURTH]

Thanks in advance. I didnt know of any configs or logs I needed to include w/ this post so let me know if I need to update something.

You are having massive clock skew. This is most likely due to instability in your overclock. Also, 64 bit gentoo is a bit more appropriate for your CPU, only because it has specific software fixes that are easier to enable.

How do I fix it?

EDIT: ok i reset my overclock everything was back at bone stock, still same problem (in fact it was a bit worse in ET)

Also I dont use 64bit gentoo b/c I thought that would break games, like if there isnt a 64bit version of a game i wouldnt be able to play it etc... I used i686 b/c I was under the impression that a lot of software has some problems with compiling for AMD64.

An overclock isn't going to make games run at the wrong speed. Try deleting ~/.et and ~/.ut2004 to see if some setting got messed up.

It can make games run at the wrong speed. All processors have an internal timer, and everything runs against it, well, if you overclock and one of those cores goes haywire... what does that timer do? It also goes haywire. Software syncs the two timers, and if one is going apeshit, so is the other...

Lastly, amd64 has compatibilty with 32 bit software, just like 64 bit windows. At the moment, all problems have to do witjh firefox, in one way or another, and running a binary browser resolves it. I use it and all the normal games work fine. The only incompatibility in linux I've seen is actaully with Xienrama. :(

Well, when I returned everything to stock it was still acting up.

Just now I deleted the .etwolf and .ut2004 folders and didnt touch any of the settings and they both ran perfect. I thought great its fixed. I open the settings panel in ut2004 crank up the res to 1680x1050 and proceed to max out the settings. As soon as I get that done it starts to run like shit again. I exit it and check Enemy Territory (mind you no settings are even touched with this yet) and it too runs like shit. So i think wtf and delete the etwolf and ut2004 directories again. Start the games and both still run like shit. So I assume whatever Im doing in UT2004 is somehow getting stuck. Im going to reboot and delete the settings again and see what happens.

Y ou put too much load on it and it lost count of it's timer. Trust me, this is a timer issue. You should try 64 bit gentoo, it's much easier to fix there.

Because you don't have your kernel configured to sync the timers. In 64 bit linux, there is an option in the kernel config that made ireally easy. In 32 bit, well... I gave up on it. Huge pain in the butt. I'd reccomend you do the same, if you have the time, because 64 bit is most definitely mature now. :)

ok, well excuse my ignorance i suppose I will give that a shot here in a bit. What is the setting in the kernel I will need to turn on in the kernel, and will I need to install special nvidia drivers? Will cedega still work? I saw in the amd64 howto that people were talking about making a 32 chroot. Do I really have to go to all that trouble just to get it to work right with games? Sorry for all the question, I would just like some confirmation b4 I jack up my otherwise nice running system.

Oh, and thanks for your help. :)

32 bit stuff works damn near flawlessly from inside a 64 bit system. In fact, since the libraries are binary and downloaded and installed, those that need them tend to work better since they are running against static binaries... also, if what I understand is right, multilib makes you build 32 bit libraries anyway, so you get your cake and eat it to. Things tend to work for me, I also don't use cedega too often, I usually get it when I get bored... just to see how things are going, but tend to get annoyed by how I have to buy it for 3 months only to fight to get shit to work in 32 bit or 64 bit linux.
