I must say I haven't tried fro a while... But what kind of driver do you have: portage or kernel? I have installed portage's HDA driver but haven't tried using my microphone. Can you tell me what kernel and HDA driver you have on your system?

I am using kernel 2.6.16-r7. I took the CVS alsa-driver code and inserted it into my kernel source, but then things get a bit funky. In order to use the internal modem I use the drivers from Linuxant, and their drivers replace the hda-intel and hda-codec modules. They compile against my kernel source tree but utilise Linuxant code. Once thats all done the audio works perfectly, speakers mute when jack plugged in, mic works etc. The only thing left to confirm is S/PDIF, my cable arrives next week sometime but I have no reason to suspect there is any problem there.

Thanks for the info. I don't in fact want to mess around with CVS as I'm not that far in my knowledge of Linux. I can afford waiting a bit till that CVS code gets included in the kernel - do you by chance have any hint on when it will be? OTOH I can make some tests with the S/PDIF output as I have appropriate cables. See you, say, in the next few days?

No idea when the CVS alsa will make it into mainstream code. I haven't had any probelms with it, but then my experience has been limited to this one specific driver. The older boxes were and still are all working fine with ~x86 kernel code. Also looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer to test the S/PDIF - I now leave on tuesday for Indonesia, so hopefully I will return to find a nice shiny cable to play with. Next time I'll know to grab those little Dell extras with the original order - I couldn't find the cable I need in Adelaide or Brisbane shops, or even in the jaycar catalogue!

I took my time but here's my own variation on the position_fix trick:
Code:
echo "options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1" > /etc/modules.d/snd_hda_intel
modules-update
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart

I was trying a lot of options to make my sound working. For me this is works only with position_fix=2.

Code:
localhost ~ # lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
