I upgraded to gentoo-sources-2.6.15 today when I saw that it was available in testing. I did a make oldconfig and didn't notice any changes which related to my hardware except the MCE for my AMD cpu and something with power management. I left the powermanagent option at default and the MCE option on as my processor supported it. Unfortunately it paniced after reboot. The image of the screen is below:

http://files.upl.silentwhisper.net/upload9/DSCN0867-SCALED.JPG

I've tried booting the kernel without the MCE option compiled in but it returned the same result. make oldconfig has also worked perfectly all the way from 2.6.11 to 2.6.14.

edit 1:

I've tried booting without ehci in the kernel and It didn't work. BTW, I've gotten those first usb errors before without any problems.

edit 2:

Now I've tried disabling USB KEYBOARD, USB MOUSE, AND USB PARKING without any luck. I did also install this kernel on my other box with identical motharboard which booted without any problems.

Hmm.. no problem here on my Shuttle SN95G5 w/gentoo-sources

What's it trying to load when it crashes? Did you rebuild/install all modules?

Don't know really. It seems to be some kind of HID device. And yes I've rebuilt everything.

Ok, so I removed three of my usb units (kept my external hdd and the kvm switch cable) and it booted fine without any errors at all (both the old usb errors and the new HID one). So now I'm gonna try isolating the failing unit.

The problem was my Microsoft force feedback 2 joystick. Who knows if that caused some of my hardlocks too. Obviously this new kernel is more stricter when doing error checkings. Still I would like to know if it is driver or hardware problem. As far as I remember I've never had any problems with that joystick both in Windows or GNU/Linux.

The errors kept coming back from other units and my other computer with same motherboard and similar hardware started to exhibit the same behaviour. For ex, my SE phone didn't want to mount but only spit out USB errors when connected on my computer while it worked fine on the other one. Same thing but revere results happened with my Maxtor external drive. My Iaudio U3 mounted fine on both computers but the files got corrupted. Though, they were less corrupted after transferring from the other computer.

I took the time to try out the 2.6.16-rc2-nitro1 kernel and it fixed the usb errors! Now I can even boot with my joystick without any problem. Don't know if the corrupted files on my Iaudio U3 is fixed but I pressume it is.

Case closed. :P
