At long last, alpha binary available for download on their site. Google will show you where. Much faster for me than Windows client in Wine (16fps instead of 8fps). Like I said, it's alpha, so don't get all bent outta shape when the sound & some keys don't work. Some helpful info in forums.secondlife.com. Requires free account with Second Life. Have (virtual) fun.

This looks interesting. I will keep my eye on it until there is a stable version or is atleast in portage.

Same here, when it's good to go I'll play and support it with my monehs. :)

A game like this may just show up as a big revenue for linux users. Who knows... maybe that'll show big guys like blizzard that WoW would be great for linux, though I personally believe they are porting it just not saying anything until it's good to go. Anyway... can't wait to play this. :D

If it's subscription based, I'll wait until it says stable.

You can get a basic lifetime account for a few $, no monthly subscription etc.

I'll wait till it goes gold. I was a bit scarred after trying Medal of Honor before it went gold. Speaking of which, when are they gonna fix that?

I don't suppose anyone has gotten this going on an AMD64 system, compiled in 64bit :P

The supplied binary is 32bit only! Has some .. complex looking dependencies.

There isn't a source code release, binary only. It does come will all the libs it requires and works perfectly on my AMD64 install :) An open source client is on Lnden Labs furure proposals, but thats a long long way off. When the Linux client comes out of alpha, it may be possible to persuade them to release a 64bit build allong side the 32bit.

LindenLab just released their Client as OpenSource, so in case anyone is interested in helping out making the linux client more stable or fixing bugs, follow the link...

Is this a full client that is open source, or is this just some offshoot semi functional program? Can I play the game with this open source software?

I wouldn't think about source ebuilds any time soon, though. It doesn't compile with GCC4 and the list of dependencies is fairly long.

It's (supposedly - I haven't built it yet) the full client. Unfortunately, if you want sound you have to use a closed-source library, and the same if you want fast JPEG2000 decompression (since all the textures are compressed using JPEG2000, this could be an issue). I haven't looked too closely at the licensing on these yet.

I got it compiled up to the point that it depends on xmlrpc-epi which doesn't seem to be in portage and the un-official ebuild I found didn't compile,

stuff needed:
dev-libs/apr
dev-libs/apr-util

needs the 1.2.x branches which are hard-masked for testing

couldn't see an ebuild for the src so I'll put some patches here (include paths and gcc4.1 issues);

i have managed it to play it under windows, but now if i try it under gentoo on my amd64, i'm getting this error:
Code:
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or director

I then tried to link the libSDL-1.2.so.0 from my libs to lib32, but then i got this error:
Code:
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL-1.2.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

which seems obvious, because these aren't 32bit libs.
now is my question, how do i get the correct libraries, because i want to play it on my gentoo box

ps: yes i tried to reemerge libsdl with multilibs on, but still nothing

I try the ebuild with the binary client (1.13.3.2) under x86. First it crash every time I login. After I do my first login under windows its possible to connect with the linux-client, but its completly not useable. It seems like opengl does not work (all graphics are like black, fps are around 5 / minutes!). (I've got a new nividia 7600gt, it work great with other apps.) I try to export LL_GL_NOEXT=x and the others, but always the same. Its better to use the source ebuild? Any other idea? Where can get more information instead of the ("First setup your payment method"-) forum from Linden-Labs? Thanks (and sorry for my bad english).

EDIT: The most error I see in the terminal is like this:

Code:
[ERROR] tcd_decode: incomplete bistream
[ERROR] read error
[ERROR] tcd_decode: incomplete bistream
[ERROR] read error
[ERROR] tcd_decode: incomplete bistream

Whats this?

I think it would be good to start a new thread about this. This one is about the Alpha Client which doesn't require any compiling.

I used the Alpha Client (without compiling), so I think I am right here ;-)

Hi folks,

I just wanted to tell those of you who still don't know if they should try it, that I run the client on...
- x86 Intel celeron on Laptop
- win xp on Laptop
- x86 AMD on Desktop
...all with nvidia graphics cards.

All linux systems are up-to-date.

I can really say that there are no differences to me between the linux client and the windows client.
When you start the linux client from a console, you'll notice, that most of the time when the client seems to hang fetching of textures fails.
I would say I have not less hangs on the windows client, so even if I'ts alpha, I think this is already a very nice piece of software and I'm glad I only have to leave linux to use Dreamweaver or Photoshop, which I still do not want to miss.

I would say: Try the binary, it's worth it.

Yours Henri
