I'm playing with setting up an computer for my neice, 8 years old (so don't be sending any marriage offers), and have looked into Debian Jr. for her.
Anyone play with this yet? _________________ "Beer is proof God loves us, and wants us to be happy. Ben Franklin" |

Debian Jr. has been dead for quite some time. Gentoo, however features many of the cool apps that they did. Here are some of my recomendations:
Edu-software:
- TuxMath
- TuxType
- TuxMathScrabble (may be a little hard to work with)
Fun Software:
- TuxPaint
- GCompris (may be a bit young for her)
- pytraffic (can be a little confusing)
Games:
- Frozen Bubble
- Monkey Bubble
- Pingus
- Abe
- TuxRacer
- TuxKart
- PowerManga
I'm currently working in the area of children computing, and if I may ask:
- What are some of the tasks she uses the computer for most?
- What are some of the problems you have with her using a computer?
I would appreciate any feedback from any parent/guardian. |

My little cousin (she's nine) has a Linux desktop courtesy of her father, based on KDE. She adores all the KDE games and also loves Kolourpaint. And everything in Edutainment (kdeedu-meta). If you would prefer to base the installation off of gnome or some other desktop, either you'll have to live with a lot of KDE programs or just ignore my advice. _________________ emerge --info

Mike,
Thanks to you and all the others who replied. I'm giving my sister, and neice a couple of older boxes, just to get them into something. Hard to bang on a keyboard, if you don't have one.
AFAIK, there isn't any problems with her using a box, she has access to them at school. I'm just trying to give the kid a shove into traffic.
I imagine a paint program, and some edutainment programs, and I'll give here about 10,000 games I don't have a chance to play with. _________________ "Beer is proof God loves us, and wants us to be happy. Ben Franklin" |
