OK folks -- let's try and keep things at least close to on-topic. :) Religious distro wars can quickly get out of hand, so let's stick to Gentoo, OK? (admittedly, the forum description for Newbies doesn't mention Gentoo, specifically, but let's all assume it's there, m'kay :))

why would it be hard to configure the modem?

Because WinModems are notoriously hard to configure under linux. WinModems aren't real modems -- they offload a lot of their processing to the CPU, so they require greater interaction with the OS, and thus also require more complicated drivers.

That's the short version -- for the long version, search google for "linux winmodem" and you'll get more information than you ever wanted to know.
