I play America's Army (UT engine); I have a ATI Radeon 9200 128mb; my FPS is quite a bit lower on Gentoo than Windows 2000. When I mute the sound on AA, it moves my FPS from 38 to 44; my question is, is that normal? (It doesn't make any difference on my laptop). If anyone has tips on getting my FPS higher than would be nice too. :D

Edit: Oops, I didn't mean to put this in Unsupported Software

Often some sound processing is done in software; hence CPU time is taken and frame rates lowered.

Oddly enough, I remember getting a framerate increase in UT2003 by changing it from hardware to software; I assume my driver was emulating the hardware features.

ya, either sound effect processing is done totally in cpu, or your soundcard's drivers are inefficient and still slow down cpu.

That makes sense I guess, but like a said, on my laptop it makes no difference whatsoever.

Also, I have a GeForce4 420 Go 32mb on my laptop and I get 50 FPS where I get 44 on my desktop (with the sound muted); on glxgears my desktop gets several hundred better FPS.

I was just looking into overclocking my Radeon 9200 a bit, and I found that I can clock the GPU from 250 to 270 and memory from 200 to 230 (not max, just as a test) and glxgears jumps from 2070 to 2328 FPS, while there is virtually no affect on AA FPS.

Is this just ATI's amazing display of skill in making Linux drivers?

Probably just the curse of ATI's drivers... Bear in mind glxgears isn't much of a benchmark though.

Hi,

first: ATI is dead slow on linux
second:if your laptop has a better soundchip/card than your desktop, the influence of the sound will be lower.
