I was reading through the gentoo-dev mail list. One poster was told by another to solve the particular problem they had by "injecting the ebuild".

Someone else replied "Perfect, looks like gentoo users need to be better educated on the portage system ;)"

Since the problem (having an ebuild that you don't want trampled) was one I could foresee having somewhere down the line, I went to the two Portage references on the main page.

Nothing was said about "injecting" an ebuild.

Then I tried the man pages for emerge and ebuild. Nothing there either.

Is there a manual that covers this topic? Please post where it is if you know.

If you don't know where it's documented, but you know what it is and how to use it, I'd appreciate that info, too.

It's in the manpages:
Code:
$ man emerge | grep inject
"emerge  inject  package-version" adds a stub entry

You just missed it. ;) Also, from "emerge --help":

Code:
       inject (-i short option)
Add a stub entry for a package so that Portage thinks that it's
installed when it really isn't.  Handy if you roll your own
              packages.  Example:
              emerge inject gentoo-sources-2.4.19

I used that technique to inject the giFT package after I downloaded the CVS version, so it works very nicely. Had to do that to use giFTcurs.
